Bishops Chapel is the perfect choice for a Cornish holiday that’s a little off the beaten tourist track, yet still achingly close to the beaches, lakes, and restaurants that North Cornwall is so well-known for.
Secluded in the peaceful rural hamlet of Thurdon, the delights of historic Kilkhampton, Sandymouth, and Bude are within just a few miles. Yet once you’ve settled into your divine retreat, you could even find yourselves putting those plans to explore on hold!
This unique Wesleyan Methodist chapel dates back to 1840. The space is full of character and has been beautifully renovated into a luxury three-bedroom retreat that feels immediately welcoming. (Friendly owners Tracy and Tony felt a “special warm quality” when they viewed the chapel for the first time, and knew immediately that they would buy it).
There’s a huge wood-burner in the raised lounge, which together with warmth from the AGA, all but guarantees toasty evenings in together. Meanwhile, triple-aspect Gothic windows showcase the surrounding farmland to perfection.
Curl up on the leather sofas and enjoy the view with a glass of wine, or head through the stained-glass Gothic door into the charming south-facing garden and sun patio… the perfect spot from which to catch a glimpse of the local bird life, and later on, the twinkling stars in the night sky.
Fire up the barbecue for a sizzling sunset supper, or head back inside to whip up a feast in the bespoke hand-made kitchen; home to the aforementioned AGA, plus modern appliances and equipment.
When it’s finally time to turn in, you’ll find the master bedroom in the chapel’s former school-house. Boasting direct access to the sun patio (perfect for morning coffee!) there’s a downy double bed and a flatscreen TV.Keep reading

Things to note
Bishops Chapel is not suitable for wheelchairs. Up to 2 dogs permitted to stay (at an additional charge of £30 per dog per stay to cover cleaning).
Guests at Bishops will also discover another quirk – Oh! Oh! is a book of poetry and short stories written by owner Tony’s Dad (George) over his lifetime. For George’s 80th birthday, Tony collated these from family and friends and published them into a book which can be bought on Amazon. There is a copy of Oh! in the Chapel and guests love it! Owner Tracy says “Every guest comments about it which was a bit of a surprise for us. Here’s an example from the Guest book:
“Seems like our holiday and stay at your beautiful Chapel are so long ago. We enjoyed it immensely. Thank you. Your father in-laws book made me feel very happy. I loved his story Birthday Reminder I found that quite emotional.”
Illustrations were all done by Becky, Tony’s daughter. George is also an artist and the Bristol balloon pic on the back of Oh! is hanging on the wall at the Chapel. Tracy’s sister is also an artist and the chapel also features one of her paintings.
Where you'll be staying
What the guests of Bishops Chapel say
“Bishops is a delightful property and a perfect base for exploring Cornwall and Devon. It was very comfortable, spotlessly clean and well equipped. Our family of four only stayed for three nights over the Easter holiday and so had an action packed program of adventures on the beach, in the sea and walks along the stunningly beautiful coastal paths of North Cornwall. I wish we had stayed longer and had the luxury of a rest day where we had just stayed at Bishops and enjoyed its peace and tranquility. Maybe next time. Tracy was a great host. Her communication was very good. She was quick to respond and the check-in instructions and directions were easy to follow. All in all, a wonderful find and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for that special place.”
“This is a quirky but gorgeous and very comfortable property, everything you think you might need is provided and more besides. Off the beaten track so quiet and a great haven at the end of the day to come back to and relax, but close enough to the coast and all that this part of Cornwall has to offer. We visited in Autumn, so appreciated the roaring log burner, but the garden and patio look like they would be equally welcoming in the summer. Highly recommended.”
“Absolutely loved this property. Quirky converted chapel with lovely original features. Beautiful garden and such peaceful surroundings. Very relaxing. We really enjoyed our stay and can’t wait to go back again soon.”
