New to Host Unusual: a log cabin and hideouts, a converted bunker and a castle with private island

18 July 2017

Our latest journey takes us from East to West as we explore a range of exciting new hideaways, from a secluded log cabin and cleverly crafted hideouts in the Essex countryside, to a converted bunker in Wales that was once used as a decoy to deter enemies, and a historic castle and private island in Lough Erne, in the picturesque region of Fermanagh in Northern Ireland.

Browning Bros Log Cabin

The first of two properties in mid-Essex under the same family ownership, this quaint log cabinwas built in 2016 and is accessed via a country path, perched on the edge of one of the hidden lakes to be found on the property grounds – anideal place to escape busy everyday life. With three bedrooms, and welcoming four-legged friends too, this is a great choice for a family looking to holiday in a  rural environment surrounded by nature. Imaginerelaxing on the outdoor deck with the perfectly calm lake waters as your view, and no neighbours to disrupt your peace!  Sounds pretty idyllic to us.

Browning Bros Teybrook Orchard

The second location from Browning Bros is Teybrook Orchard, a luxury camping retreat in the heart of Essex. The brothers have been expert den-builders since they were children andthis skill has evolved to enable them to create unusual and rural hideaways for guests to enjoy.  Choose from a converted Grain Silo, North American tipi, shepherd’s hut, or a range of bell tents and yurts for larger families and groups. The site is also available for exclusivehire – imagine a private and intimate wild wedding, family get-togetheror birthday celebration with your favourite people.  What could be better?

The Decoy Bunker

We’re goin’ underground now with this incredibly unique rural escape amidst some of Wales’s most gorgeous scenery.  This expertly renovated World War II ‘decoy’ bunkertells its own historic story, originally built as a ruse for enemy Luftwaffe bombers, who were led to believe the bunker was a prime target. Today it offers people the (thankfully risk-free!) chance to stay in a light-filled subterranean holiday home; lock out the rest of the world and relax in a quirky base from which to enjoy the Black Mountains and Forest of Dean, with an expansive view over the Severn Estuary from its elevated position.

Belle Isle Castle and Private Island

Traversing the Irish Sea, we now reach a 470-acre estate set in lavish grounds, and a historic castle and private islandin the tranquil waters of Lough Erne. Gather together your favourite people and plan a celebration in regal splendour in your very own fairytale castle!  Alongside the luxurious castle rooms, newly refurbished coach house cottages and historic courtyard apartments provide the accommodation, whilst activities include fishing, tennis, canoeing, kayaking, archery, sailing and bushcraft – and that’s before you’ve even set foot outside the estate grounds to explore the rest of the Irish charms of Fermanagh!
