Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight may only measure 23 miles by 13 miles, but you'll find a wondrous wealth of pretty towns, villages and seascapes here - not forgetting an array of quirky places to stay.

Located just off the South coast of England, the Isle of Wight makes for an idyllic break from the bustle of London, less than 2 hours away by ferry (or indeed, the last remaining Hovercraft service in the world!)

The UK's "Holiday Island" is probably best known for its beaches and traditional seafront promenades, such as those you'll find at sandy Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor, which is peppered with gorgeous vintage beach huts.

Compton Bay and Yaverland Beach are prime destinations for hunters of dinosaur remains and fossils, while a glimpse of The Needles - three huge, pure white chalk rocks guarded by an historic lighthouse - is a holiday must.

Newport is the Isle of Wight's capital, home to the famous Isle of Wight Festival and a hub for shoppers! Ryde, meanwhile, is the island's largest town, known affectionately as the "town on the beach".  Historic Cowes, on the north coast, is famed for its sailing events...water babies take note!

There are plenty of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty to take in too, including Brading, known for its Roman villa. The village of Godshill is renowned for its medieval beauty, boasting thatched cottages and an ancient church.

History lovers and culture vultures will naturally head for the west side of the island, where the Victorian village escape of Freshwater captivated none other than Poet Laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Take a trip to his monument, situated on a rolling hill, and feel creatively revived!
