Cambridgeshire

You could possibly be forgiven for thinking that Cambridge and Cambridgeshire were one and the same. But while it’s worth spending time in the university city of Cambridge, gazing at ancient architecture and taking a punt on the river (those views of the ‘Backs’ college shouldn’t be missed!), there is plenty more to experience in this traditionally English county of counties – along with many unusual places to stay.

Once a submerged plain, the fertile Cambridgeshire landscape is now filled with winding country paths and charming towns. You’ll also find two of the UK’s grandest cathedrals here – Ely, known as the ‘Ship of the Fens’, and Peterborough Cathedral in the north.

History buffs will enjoy a visit to Huntingdon, the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell. Take the ‘Historic Trail’ around the centre and over the River Ouse, then wander around the Cromwell Museum to get your historic fix!

Continue your journey along the River Ouse with a trip to St. Ives, with its bustling markets and lush water meadows, then head for the Fens in the north east, and to the former island of March. The 14th century Church of St. Wendreda, complete with its magnificent angel-carved roof, is a must-see.

While away some time in Wisbech, the county’s second largest town, set on the banks of the River Nene – and if you’re in a regal mood, Buckden, once host to Edward I, Richard III and Henry VIII amongst many others, will have you yearning for a glistening crown!

Round off your visit with a trip to the ancient colleges of Cambridge, including 15th century Queens and Emmanuel. It’s probably the most ‘touristy’ thing you’ll do in the county – but by now, you’ve earned it.
