Nestled on the edge of Dartmoor, right at the end of a private track, Hideaway Camping is exactly that – a 24-acre expanse of pure Devon nature, hidden beautifully away from everyday life.

Surrounded by gently babbling brooks, wide open fields, and soothing woodland, you’ll feel as though you can finally unwind with your loved ones.

There’s plenty of space for everybody to run wild and free here, along with thoughtful detail that includes a magical fairy glade for the kids, tree swings, a dedicated picnic area, and even a hammock garden for those who love curling up in the afternoon sun with a good book.

Where to stay? Take your pick!  The bowtop Gypsy caravan is ideal for couples, with its soft-glowing wood-burner and cosy double bed. The shepherd’s hut, lovingly restored by friendly owner Eddy, is rich in rustic charm, overlooking the whispering trees.

If you’re in the mood for something different, Igluu and Iglula are new additions to the site – quirky camping ‘igloos’ for couples and families with a sense of adventure! Furnished with squishy bean bags and comfy beds, you’ll have everything you need to relax.

Oh, and Forrest Glamp, the site’s brand-newest retreat, is a joyful jungle-themed double-decker that will make you feel like you’re relaxing in the refreshing midst of the rainforest.  Perfect for families and friends, up to six guests can sleep up on the top deck (where the cool kids always sit!)

Last but not least, the Amazing 80’s American Airstream sleeps up to five guests in retro comfort, with a fully-equipped kitchen and a separate, log-burner equipped living space.

More information

If you prefer doing your own thing, there are twelve camping pitches available, complete with firepit, and access to the generous facilities.

Head to the Little Melbury Cabin to make new friends; a lively communal space that’s home to a sink, fridge/freezer and microwave plus bathroom facilities (including ‘proper’ flushing loos!)  Browse through the selection of books, or challenge someone to a board game if you’re in a competitive mood.

Meander round the sparkling, wildlife-strewn pond for a while, perhaps saying hello to the friendly resident pigs on your way. If you’re feeling energetic, you could take a longer walk to the stunning Meldon reservoir, through the bridleway that leads you through scenic Ruby country.

If it’s more of a pampering session you’re after, you can book a therapy treatment in a dedicated space in a tranquil corner of the site. Choose from reflexology, massage, reiki, or even a shamanic healing session, all designed to bring you back to yourself.

All that’s left for you to do now is wander over to the communal ‘Hideaway Henge’ firepit by evening, chattering away over toasted marshmallows. A perfect end to yet another perfect day spent at Hideaway Camping.

Things to note

Regrettably, due to livestock on site, pets are not permitted. The entire site can be hired for large group events, weddings and celebrations.

What the guests of Hideaway Camping say

“Pretty, Peaceful, Practical – Perfect! I’ve just returned from a little stay at Hideaway Camping and absolutely loved it. (I’m a bit reluctant to write a review as I’d quite like to keep it a secret, but that doesn’t seem fair to the lovely people who own/run this site!) They’ve started with a very beautiful piece of English countryside and made into an ideal campsite without ruining it. There’s all the practical stuff there, the essentials, but they’ve made all of those facilities just a little bit nicer than they actually have to be. They’ve added aesthetics and whimsy. They’ve added comfort and a touch of luxury (sitting on the comfy sofa while waiting for a mate to finish her shower was a real treat!) I’m definitely going back.”

“Excellent site, great hosts. A wonderful place to get away from it all.
It would be difficult to find more welcoming and accommodating hosts, we felt like we were visiting old friends. A beautiful site hidden away in the heart of the countryside with a limited number of individual pitches which are well spaced meaning a degree of privacy whilst still maintaining a feeling of community. Each pitch has its own fire pit with logs, ‘Mystical Fire’ and marshmallows to toast available in the on site shop. Lots for children to see and explore on site including the Fairy Glade, a stream and pond and The Cabin well equipped for those wet days. A haven of peace, quiet and tranquillity, a great place to get away from it all and relax with camp fires and stargazing.”

“Amazing – camping at its best. This is a real hidden gem – the owners are lovely, they have the perfect combination of being on hand, friendly, welcoming but also just allowing you to relax and unwind. Wonderful setting, beautiful location, great little touches (like the hidden hammocks, the woodland walk, fairy glade). Can’t recommend highly enough, we’re already booked again for this year.”
