Full description
A magnificent, award-winning conversion in the heart of Rye, master architect created and perfect for stylish group breaks.

Winner of the coveted Architects' Journal Retro Fit Award, shortlisted for the World Architect Awards, and featured in high-end magazines from Grand Designs to Dezeen, Old St. John's Ambulance Station is a jaw-dropping conversion for memorable group breaks in the heart of medieval Rye.

Friendly owner Marta is also the designer and master architect responsible for the spectacular retreat, which was originally built in the 1950s, and features a tranquil, private walled garden.

Sleeping up to eight guests in four stylish bedrooms, the vast, sociable space is ideal for groups of family and friends (and their dogs!) to catch up and relax, amongst surroundings described by the Architects' Journal judging panel as "exquisite... very liveable."

Paying tasteful homage to the building's medical history, the style throughout is industrial and minimalist, with careful attention to detail. The entrance hall, furnished with vintage pieces sourced in Rye, sets an elegant scene for your break.

Light floods in through huge windows and glass doors that can be thrown open to let the outside, in... and the original ambulance doors even remain on the wall, as a fascinating feature.

You're sure to find the huge open plan living, dining, and kitchen area a delight to spend time in, with its gorgeous double-sided wood-burner, cosy seating, and wrought-iron lighting.

Meanwhile, the kitchen comes equipped with gleaming Smeg appliances and a brushed stainless-steel central island that makes cooking a joy, while you can break bread around the sand blasted timber table, on Navy chairs.

You'll find a shower room and a comfortable double bedroom with a walled garden view downstairs, too, while upstairs awaits the second double, and an immaculate, pure white bathroom with a freestanding bath that's just waiting to be filled with indulgent bubbles!

Further along is a twin room (this can be made into a double if needed), and the spectacular superking master with its en-suite shower. And did we mention the amazing window study room in the hallway, featuring mesmerising views of Rye's historic buildings?

What about al fresco relaxation? On balmy afternoons, you can simply grab a bottle of wine and head out to the terrace, which features plenty of seating, and a firepit to chat and tell stories around later on.

Prefer heading out? We doubt you'll really want to, but if you must, the nostalgic cobbled street will lead you directly into the centre of Rye, which you'll find teeming with fascinating art, history, and culture. Oh, and there are plenty of beaches nearby, too.

(What else could you possibly need?)
