Wildly beautiful, blissfully simple and endlessly remote, you’ll find Shobac on an invigorating coastal outcrop in Nova Scotia, overlooking the swelling ocean.

If you’ve ever wanted to write a novel, contemplate life with a stroll on the beach, or you simply want to get as far away from it all as possible, this is the place.

Built on the site of a former village, each unique off-grid cabin is ideally positioned to make the most of its rural surroundings, and you’ll find plenty of creature comforts inside that make a holiday complete. Each cabin features a well-equipped kitchen, televisions and WiFi access (not that we think you’ll need it!)

Four rustic holiday cottages each feature two bedrooms and are reminiscent of fishing boats; stylish yet frugal with exposed framing and simple furnishings. Greet the free-roaming sheep each morning as you collect vegetables from the organic garden, and immerse yourselves totally in nature. One of the cottages is insulated for year-round use, and features a bathtub that looks out to sea.

The Schoolhouse is a two-bedroomed cabin that has been rescued and restored from the original 1830s schoolhouse, complete with restored wooden benches and a combined kitchen, diner and lounge ‘great room’ that imbues the building’s original character.

The Studio is an elegant, barn-like cabin set on the edge of the cliffs, with dramatic coastal views from sixty-eight feet of glazing. You’ll find cosy leather furnishings, high ceilings and a long table that’s ideal for gatherings and celebrations. The octagonal Barn is a social space comprising 2000 square feet, ideal for weddings, workshops, performances and retreats.

Point House is a unique construction, found on land that was formerly a small fishing port. The house is surrounded by water on three sides, and accessible via a dirt road and a raised terrace – the ideal getaway location with a secluded sleeping loft.

The Boathouse is generally used as an overflow space for larger groups and shares the kitchen & bathroom with the main house.

Finally, The Gate House is a two-storey cabin that sleeps up to five people, with a traditional gabled roof and a 24-foot wide corner window that overlooks the northern valley.

Though Shobac is in a remote location, you’ll find you’re close enough to enjoy all kinds of urban activities and traditional dining opportunities. There are plenty of small towns and villages nearby that host regular festivals, with Halifax slightly further afield for city jaunts. The beaches are breathtaking of course, and you can reach the nearby LaHave islands via kayak, if you’re feeling slightly more adventurous!

So if you’ve always harboured an idea of journeying to the ends of the Earth, a stay at Shobac will make those fresh-air filled dreams come true. Just beware: you may never want to emerge in real life again!
