The Dunes Seaside Railway Carriage
A unique converted Victorian railway carriage just yards from the beach at Gwbert-on-Sea in Ceredigion, Wales.
From children to adults, everyone will delight in a stay at the Seaside Railway Carriage. Set amongst undulating lawns, welcome to this truly special accommodation at Gwbert-on-Sea, just moments from the stunning Welsh coast.
Oozing historic charm, the Seaside Railway Carriage dates back to Victorian times. Having once transported Victorian passengers to seaside holiday spots, it's still delighting holidaymakers over a century later. The carriage has been converted to offer (stationary!) accommodation for up to six people, and, located just yards from Patch Beach, has all the makings of a wonderful family break.
From a distance, you might not immediately recognise the Seaside Railway Carriage's original purpose, but on closer inspection there's no denying the original windows with sliding sashes, and the interior joinery. The owners have converted and extended the carriage in order to fit a family comfortably, but without losing its original character.
As you enter through the rear extension, you'll come to the basic kitchen and dining room, large enough to feed a family with ease. With an electric cooker, a fridge with freezer compartment, and a microwave, the kitchen has everything you need to self-cater during your stay. There's even a useful washing machine for rinsing out salty, sandy bathing suits after a day at the beach! The good-sized dining table seats six - perfect for quality family time over dinner.
The lounge is found next door, where two leather sofas and armchairs combine to make a welcoming sanctuary for all. Curl up in front of the electric fire on chilly nights, turn on the TV, or perhaps play a game of cards around the coffee table.
A second living area comes in the form of the conservatory - a glorious place to enjoy a morning coffee and soak up the warmth of the sun. Enjoy meals together at the cane dining furniture, and, on fine days, why not take it outside for a spot of al fresco dining?
The four bedrooms at the Seaside Railway Carriage all make the most of the carriage's traditional features. The first is a comfortable double room - perfect for parents. The second, a single room, is found next door. Kids will love the third bedroom - a twin room, where the beds are arranged toe-to-toe! And finally, the fourth bedroom, accessed via the twin room, offers a final single bed. Wherever you sleep, look forward to the morning light spilling through those gorgeous original windows, and imagine the carriage's past adventures.
Finally, the family bathroom is equipped with a bath and electric shower overhead, as well as a basin and WC.
With a stay in an original railway carriage, you might wonder how your holiday could possibly be more memorable - but there's plenty of reasons in this gorgeous corner of Wales! Patch Beach is well-known for its sea-fishing and sailing (so isn't it lucky there's space for your boat at the carriage, and a boat club right opposite...?). Gwbert is a perfect place for spotting birdlife, basking sharks, and even orcas and minke whales - fantastic for nature lovers. And further along the coast, explore Poppit Sands, Mwnt Beach, Aberporth and Tresaith, for sandcastles, shells, and paddling.
The hamlet of Gwbert has two hotels which serve food to non-guests, so if you're not in the mood to cook, you don't have far to walk for delicious fare. The Cliff Hotel even has its own spa for some indulgent chill-out time. Two miles away is the busy market town of Cardigan, offering shops, pubs, restaurants, and a cinema - great entertainment on rainy days!
Little beats the innocent memories of family holidays at the seaside - and nothing makes them more unforgettable than a stay at the Seaside Railway Carriage. So round up the family, climb aboard, and enjoy every moment of your ride.Things to note
