The Water Castle
Totally unique, utterly charming, and undoubtedly one of the prettiest former water towers in the country, The Water Castle in gorgeous Northumberland blends ‘rural' and ‘regal' for that very special escape to the country.
On first arriving at The Water Castle, you'll soon see how it acquired its name - but may have very little clue of its former purpose! Its ingenious designers combined form and function to create a working water tower that was also a stunning structure in its own right. With stone walls, arched windows and rooftop crenels, the final result is a single-storey, miniature castle in the countryside, waiting for you to take your throne as king or queen!
Today, The Water Castle offers self-catering accommodation for guests seeking peace and quiet, beautiful views, and more than their fair share of unusual features to enjoy! Sleeping four between two bedrooms, it's absolutely ideal for small families or couples to experience a secluded, yet unforgettable, retreat.
As you enter through the wooden arched door, you'll find yourself in the homely open-plan living area, filled with light from bespoke arched windows. The combination of white plastered walls, exposed brickwork, wooden floors and timber ceiling beams create a wonderfully peaceful, contemporary feel, so get ready for that first wave of relaxation the moment you step inside!
Three enticing sofas sit around a pretty coffee table in the calming living area, where an electric wood burner keeps everyone toasty, even on the chilliest days. A TV and DVD player are provided for your entertainment, while the small library of DVDs is sure to get you started.
The adjacent kitchen area has been finished to the highest specification, where granite worktops and a slate floor add touches of sheer class. It comes fully equipped with everything you'll need to prepare delicious home comforts, which you can enjoy together in the adjacent dining area with its large wooden table and seating for six.
Both bedrooms at The Water Castle boast the same attention to detail and beautiful finishes you see in the rest of the property. Cream walls, traditional wooden furniture and exquisite ceiling beams create a peaceful, country feel for sweet dreaming, while arched windows bring the rural scenery inside for a heavenly start to the morning.
You'll find a king-size bed in the first bedroom, as well as an en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower overhead. The second bedroom features a zip-and-link bed (which can be configured as twin beds or a super-king for couples), as well as a separate shower room.
Beyond your castle, you'll find a large lawned garden with a patio, terrace, and furniture, all set for you to enjoy those heavenly countryside views. Beyond, there's also one acre of natural woodland to explore! Take a stroll to the local village of Newton, where you'll find a highly recommended restaurant and bar, while nearby Corbridge is well worth a visit for its medieval buildings, shops, pubs and galleries.
The Water Castle is also a great base for exploring the gems of Northumberland. You'll find the remains of Hadrian's Wall just a 10-minute drive away, while Hexham (known for its famous racecourse and abbey) is also in easy distance. Spend a day along the Northumberland Heritage Coast, getting sand in your shoes or taking in some of the many castles along the way, including famous Alnwick and Bamburgh.
At the end of your day, look forward to another peaceful night in your castle - surely the cosiest of them all! After all, when visiting the county with the most castles in England, how could you stay anywhere else but The Water Castle?Things to note
