A seriously Instagrammable large group retreat with an epic kitchen disco and sugar-sweet interiors, set within the walls of a 13th century castle on the edge of the Quantock Hills.
  • Sleeps: 20
  • Bedrooms: 6
  • Bathrooms: 6
  • Minimum stay: 2 nights

We’re willing to bet you’ve never stayed anywhere like Halula Gem before. After all, how many retreats a) are set within ancient castle walls on the edge of the Quantock Hills, and b) boast the funkiest, most colourful interiors you’ve ever seen?

Sleeping up to 20 guests in six gemstone-themed bedrooms, this really is the perfect place if you’re looking to celebrate something special with your favourite people in tow, kids included.

Your only issue might be what to do first. Will you feast like royalty under the Roman arch, quaff potion-like cocktails from pink goblets at the orange-bricked indoor bar, or make like Sophie Ellis-Bextor on the chequerboard dance floor… in your very own kitchen disco?

Halula is another word for ‘honey bun’: a delicious snack created from cinnamon, icing and sugar. As such, you’ll find sugar-sweet inspiration everywhere, from jewel-toned sofas and a pink fireplace (festooned with pink pigs!) in the living space, to the spa-like neon relaxation room, equipped with cosy egg-chairs.

What else? Well, there’s a dedicated ‘glam room’ for puttin’ on the glitz in style, and a sauna and bubbly indoor hot tub that are ideal for those ‘get away from it all’ moments.

Not forgetting the games room, complete with pool table, and the swish movie room with its projector, pink beams, and squishy beanbags… film nights don’t get more fun than this!

And just in case you were worried that this is retreat that’s heavy on the style, but light on the substance, don’t. Four ovens make short work of catering – there’s also a microwave, two fridges, and that all-important dishwasher, plus a Nespresso machine to get your mornings off to a fully-charged start.

Gorgeously adorned with glitter and neon, Amethyst sleeps three guests, Pink Sapphire is home to a kingsize and a single bed, and Diamond is a twinkling twin, while Good as Gold, Rubellite, and Tanzanite each sleep four in two downy superking beds.

If you ever get around to leaving, there’s a beauty salon just next door, and an array of restaurants – including Marco Pierre White’s famous Steakhouse – a mere amble away.

There’s also plenty of family-friendly adventure to be found, from visiting the meerkats at the Wild Place Project, or riding rollercoasters at Brean Theme Park.

(But as we say, you’ll have to get around to leaving the sweet, sweet confines of Halula Gem first!)
