Church Stile Cottage
England / Chagford, Devon
Full description
A thatched, Grade II-listed 16th century retreat with charming original features, elegantly restored and nestled in the heart of a Devon market town known as "the friendliest place on Dartmoor!"
Built all the way back in the 16th century, Church Stile Cottage has the soothing feel of stepping into a time machine.
A charming, thatched cottage featuring original beams, granite walls, and peaceful churchyard views, you'll feel relaxed as soon as you arrive. Yet you'll also discover plenty of 21st century elements that will make holiday life go as smoothly as possible.
Perfectly positioned in the South Devon market town of Chagford, you'll also enjoy beautiful views to Dartmoor (in fact, Chagford is often referred to as "the friendliest place on Dartmoor!")
Not only is the fascinating National Trust Castle Drogo in walking distance, but with plenty of nature to explore in Dartmoor National Park, and the town itself strewn with independent shops, galleries, friendly tearooms, and a mouth-watering deli, you won't be at a loss for anything to do.
In fact, there's only one potential issue - you'll have to leave the cottage first!
Sleeping up to three guests (all adults, or two adults and a child over 14), you can also bring your well-behaved dog to stay at this truly characterful retreat.
You'll enter through the covered porch, straight into a cosy lounge styled for comfort. Here you'll find wood flooring, a squishy leather sofa and a TV to help you unwind, and a gorgeous log-burner effect gas fire that will warm your evenings to perfection.
Take the two short steps into the kitchen and dining area, which is the perfect spot for a chat over a welcome glass of wine, and gainfully equipped with all the contemporary appliances you'll need to whip up hearty feasts after a long day of exploring.
When you're all talked or tellied out, simply head upstairs to discover two sumptuous sleeping spaces.
The master double bedroom feels like a sanctuary, with its downy bed, antique dresser, and a comfy window seat with churchyard views... the ideal spot from which to get lost between the pages of a good book.
You'll find plenty of good books in the cheerful single room, which features another beautiful antique chest of drawers.
After a restful night's sleep and a tasty home-cooked breakfast, freshen up in the spacious shower room, and then it's on to acquainting yourselves with the local area.
Chagford benefits from its very own microclimate, which means you're more likely to enjoy some sunshine as you set out on that shopping trip, or take a picnic to enjoy on the banks of the River Teign.
With a regular programme of festivals held in the town, you'll find there's always something to capture your senses... which is just as well, since this visit probably won't be your last!
Things to note
Check in on any day, from 4pm - 10pm. Check out by 10am. The property does accept dogs, but not other animals. Short breaks should check in or out on Fridays, as this is the preferred changeover date.
