Culture Campsite
Netherlands / Rotterdam
Full description
An ingenious collection of upcycled, ‘tiny house'-style sleeping pods, on a creative campsite in the heart of Rotterdam.
Fresh, innovative and sustainable, Rotterdam's Culture Campsite is strewn with creative architectural delights - in the form of a range of completely unique sleeping pods.
Each pod is a characterful creation from a different designer, artist or architect, all using upcycled materials to their most imaginative effect. Let's just say that bedding down in a former trash container has never felt so cosy...
Beautifully nestled between fragrant flora, the cosy pods are ideal for couples and small families, sleeping between one to three guests. With each boasting its very own personality, you're sure to find one that's just right for you.
Sleeping Pod is a former cattle shelter on steel legs - a white plastic capsule that feels space-age in style! Equipped with a cosy double bed and flourishing plants, you'll love waking up to scenes of the campsite from your elevated position (plus there's a skylight for that all-important stargazing).
A second small family-sized pod, Floating Bricks is cleverly constructed from a combination of glass and brick, for the illusion of a space that seems to float dreamily on the air.
Ever felt like sleeping in a cosy beehive? Honeycomb brings that dream to life, in a twin pod that features two separate sleeping spaces connected by a small staircase.
Little Pea is a gorgeous green haven, fully insulated and crafted from different pieces of former farm silos. Inside there's a large double bed to enjoy long, lazy lie-ins. Scuba, created from two calf igloos (cosy pods in which calves grow up on farmland), is a blissfully snug space that'll have you craving the simple farm life in no time!
Second Skin is an architectural wonder, a small space for one or two guests that includes its own plant-strewn garden. The pod itself is hermetically sealed with flexible plastic that feels comfortably like skin.
Sweet Potato and (S)low Tech, meanwhile, are deliciously romantic spaces, individually created from a ‘spijkstaal' - a 1950s Dutch architectural wagon.
Val Ross ("walrus" in Swedish!) is made from discarded farm materials, with a circular ‘belly' that was once an old silo. Ideal for two, the ‘eye' at the entrance allows you to view the bustling campsite activity from the comfort of your bed.
Trash Inn is perfect for those who've always fancied the idea of dumpster-diving, but didn't want to get their hands dirty! A former trash container, the cosy pod features sides that open out for extra space and light.
If you're in more of an adventurous mood, a stay in Expedition North Cape, complete with its transparent, plant-filled greenhouse, should satisfy that niggling wanderlust.
Of course, you'll find generous shared facilities on site too. There are sparkling clean toilets and showers, and a kitchen area that includes a fridge packed with healthy snacks and drinks to buy if you're feeling peckish.
Oh - and not forgetting the hot tub right in the centre of the site! Why not pre-book a gently heated afternoon soak, after a morning of cycling by the River Maas?
With the creative hub and city centre of Rotterdam a mere ten minutes away too (not to mention plenty of ‘insider' visitor suggestions available from the friendly staff) you'll soon find that Culture Campsite more than lives up to its name.
Things to note
Check in from 3-8pm, check out by 11am. Culture Campsite is seasonal, closing in September each year and re-opening in May. Please note that the site also operates as an exhibition area by day.
