Lazybed & Batbox
Scotland / Nr Lochinver, Highlands
Full description
Two unique, eco-friendly retreats, blissfully secluded on a three-acre croft in the North West Highlands, with jaw-dropping mountain-and-sea-loch views, and white-sand beaches close by.
Tucked away in the far north-western corner of the Scottish Highlands, Assynt is rich in natural wonder of just about every description.
Characterised by soaring mountains, soft white-sand beaches, shimmering lochs, and abundant wildlife, this is the perfect setting to detox from digital life, and immerse your weary soul in the beauty of nature.
And it's right here, in the remote coastal settlement of Inverkirkaig, that you'll discover Lazybed and Batbox: eco-friendly, self-contained beautiful cabins to help you breathe out and enjoy life in the scenic slow lane.
Both cabins have been bespoke-created from local, sustainably-sourced materials, including Douglas fir and natural sheep's wool insulation, by a team of ecologically-aware craftspeople. Keen to protect the spectacular local environment as much as possible, the owners have also pledged to plant a tree for every square metre.
Affectionately named after old-style potato patches, Lazybed, a small, one bedroom house featuring a high, sloping ceiling, a cosy lounge with a TV, and a wood-burning stove to warm your evenings. Water is heated by a mini Norwegian boiler system, and there's a downy kingsize bed (or twins if you prefer) to curl up in at night.
Batbox, meanwhile, is a light-filled, contemporary studio space, with an overhanging roof that inspired its name... on summer evenings you may also catch a glimpse of the local bats sweeping past.
Featuring a bespoke kitchen with a Dualit mini oven and a full-size larder fridge, you can snuggle up by the roaring Morso stove, in front of the flatscreen TV (while there's no reception on either TV, there is a DVD player and a wide selection of films to choose from). There's also a comfy double bed to aid a sound night's sleep.
Whichever retreat you choose, a welcome pack will be waiting for you, with a bottle good of wine, a mouth-watering snack, fresh-ground coffee, and a basket of logs.
All that's left for you to do is laze on your spacious outdoor deck - Lazybed showcases views to Inverkirkaig's magnificent sea loch, and Batbox to Cul Mor, across the bay - with a relaxing glass of your favourite tipple.
If you're not dozing to the gentle sound of birdsong and whispering trees, there's plenty of wildlife to spot, from white-tailed eagles to mischievous badgers... be sure to note any unusual sightings in the guest book!
And if you're in the mood to linger awhile, the brightness of the stars is sure to astound you as they make their appearance in that vast, clear night sky. If you're really lucky, you may even get to feast your eyes on the Northern Lights during winter.
If you're able to tear yourselves away from your chosen cabin, you can indulge in fresh-air activity galore, from a day at the beach to reaching the summit of Suilven, one of the finest peaks in Britain. The River Kirkaig, with its beautiful waterfall path, is a mere 10-minute ramble away, and there's plenty of scope for watersports.
However you decide to spend your time in this magnificent part of the world, your hearts are sure to rise at the thought of spending a cosy evening ‘at home', as the tawny owl's hoot eases you into another dreamy night's slumber.
Things to note
Check in from 4pm - 10pm, check out by 10am. Pets are not permitted. Due to the remoteness of the cabins' location, it is strongly recommended that you stock up with holiday supplies on your way. Good Wi-Fi is available on site. Mobile coverage is intermittent in the surrounding area. The owners phone is available for landline calls.
