The Drum
Scotland / Kilberry, Argyll & Bute
Full description
An architect-designed, locally-crafted elliptical retreat-for-two, beautifully secluded on an enchanting Scottish woodland estate - complete with a castle - mere moments from the sweeping West Coast.
Designed by award-winning architects Roderick James, and expertly crafted by a local team of builders, The Drum is a picture-perfect woodland bolthole for two.
A striking, elliptical retreat with a sloped roof, high ceilings, and triple-glazed floor-to-ceiling windows with burnt-orange frames, the house cuts an impressive dash even before you've stepped inside.
Its surroundings are pretty spectacular, too: privately nestled on a small estate - complete with its own castle! - just a few miles from the scenic village of Tarbert, and achingly close to the stunning West Coast of Scotland.
Inside The Drum awaits a squishy velvet sofa to curl up on with your loved one (wee dram optional!) and a roaring wood-burning stove to warm your evenings, with the Roberts Radio providing a soft musical backdrop.
There's no TV here, but when you've got the opportunity to giggle the night away completely undistracted, or watch red squirrels gambol in the woodland from those huge windows, who needs one?
You'll find the kitchen gainfully equipped with everything you need for hearty breakfasts and romantic dinners alike, including a ceramic hob, an electric oven, and the essential microwave.
There's even a Nespresso coffee machine to help charge your mornings in style, and you'll be welcomed with a basket of fresh bread, eggs, butter, and milk.
The curved bedroom, meanwhile, is home to a luxurious kingsize bed with a comfy mattress and a wool duvet... perfect for snuggling! When it's finally time to freshen up, the sleek shower room will delight your senses, with its rainfall shower, Laura Thomas toiletries, a heated towel rail, and a ready supply of soft, fluffy towels.
You've also got the option of wrapping yourselves in the fluffy robes provided, and relaxing with a bottle of fizz. Later on, why not wander outside and fire up the barbecue for a sizzling supper, or toast marshmallows on the firepit as the stars make their shimmering appearance overhead?
If you're heading out, historic Tarbert is known as the gateway to the mesmerising peninsula of Kintyre, complete with a pretty harbour, and a beach entirely created from shells. Climb to the top of Robert the Bruce's ruined 14th century castle, set above the town, for the very best views.
When you're finished for the day, pick up some fresh seafood for a mouth-watering dinner... or perhaps pay a visit to The Drum's friendly owners at The Kilberry Inn: a tin-roofed, rose-strewn restaurant that serves the freshest local cuisine.
Things to note
There is no TV at The Drum, but good Wi-Fi and Vodafone 4G are available. The nearest petrol stations are in Lochgilphead, so the owners advise topping up on your way through.
