Station House
England / St Bees, Cumbria
A former Victorian waiting room at St Bees Railway Station, now a unique self-catering holiday home.
All aboard! How about getting away from it all with a truly unique stay in the former waiting room of a Victorian railway station?
Station House is a detached, self-catering holiday home at St Bees Station, a popular stop on the Cumbria Coastal Line. Sleeping four, this cottage offers the perfect chance to stay in a very special place with its own special history. Ideally located on the Cumbrian coast, with the seaside to the west and the Lake District to the east, Station House offers a fantastic location as well as unique accommodation.
Dating back to 1848, the waiting room at St Bees was converted in the 1930s, and has since been modernised and extended to offer spacious accommodation for a family. Every thought has gone into this sympathetic renovation; the timber-clad exterior has been carefully preserved and Station House still retains its chocolate box charm.
Inside, Station House has been lovingly decorated to create a warm and welcoming space. The lounge comes complete with comfortable sofas and a log-effect electric heater - perfect for nights curled up in front of the wall-mounted TV. In the kitchen diner, decorated in a light and airy country style, you'll find everything you need for self-catering, as well as laundry facilities. Leading from the kitchen is the bathroom with a walk-in shower. The sun lounge is another comfortable place to relax back with a newspaper or a drink, with doors opening out to the garden.
Leading on from the living areas are the bedrooms. The first - a double room - has enough space for a cot if you're travelling with a baby, and the second bedroom offers two comfortable twin beds. In all, every thought has gone into ensuring your stay at Station House is a most comfortable one!
Outside is ample parking space - although being positioned right on the train line, you may not need to bring your car to Station House. The well-proportioned garden comes with patio furniture and a BBQ for fine days, and as Station House is pet-friendly, there's plenty of outdoor space for four-legged friends to play.
St Bees Station is located in the centre of the village and is close to all local amenities, including shops and restaurants. Take a stroll along the promenade or the large, sandy beach, and marvel at the red sandstone cliffs of St Bees Head, the most westerly point of Cumbria and an important seabird reserve. You may even see a walker or two setting off on the ambitious Coast to Coast Walk, which traditionally starts at St Bees.
With a train station on your doorstep, exploring the beautiful North West couldn't be easier. Whitehaven, just five miles away, is certainly worth a visit; this popular Georgian town has been named one of the 40 Gem Towns of England. 15 miles south is Ravenglass, a quiet, picturesque coastal village. From here, take a trip to the Lake District on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway, a 15-inch narrow gauge heritage track that railway enthusiasts will adore.
A visit to nearby Muncaster Castle also comes highly recommended; this historic building is perfect for a family day out, with Himalayan Gardens, a hawk and owl centre and playground. And if you have nerves of steel, why not sign up for an overnight vigil in the haunted Tapestry Room to encounter some of the castle's former residents...?
With so much to do in this fantastic area, there really is something for the whole family to enjoy. So for a wonderful holiday that blends memorable accommodation with a beautiful location, steam ahead with a stay at Station House!
