Mesmerisingly located at the southern tip of Cumbria, South Walney Nature Reserve is home to a grey seal colony, along with diverse bird life that makes the island a true wildlife-watcher’s delight.

Walney Lighthouse occupies pride of place; a 19th century, Grade II listed tower that looks out across Morecambe Bay. You’ll discover The Lighthouse Hide nestled right at the bottom of the tower.

A light-filled, single-level cottage surrounded by rugged dunes and bordered by the sea, this is a romantic, windswept retreat that’s quite unlike any other.

Styled and furnished with high-quality modern comfort in mind, you’ll step straight into the double aspect open plan lounge and kitchen area, which floods with cheerful natural light all day long.

Here you’ll discover a window-facing dining table, and cosy sofas to curl up in as you watch your favourite TV shows, get lost in a good book… or perhaps use the binoculars provided to keep a close eye on the local wildlife! You’ll find handy guidebooks are provided, to help you identify an eider duck from a sandwich tern or a nesting gull.

You’ll find the kitchen area gainfully equipped for feasts worthy of the Captain’s table, with luxurious extra touches that include a coffee machine and an integrated dishwasher.

The kingsize bedroom is just next door, complete with a handy sink at the end of the bed, and an opulent en-suite shower room with a stack of fluffy towels.

On sunny afternoons, open a bottle of wine and head out to your fenced, furnished garden to chat about life and love in the fresh sea air. You could also head off on one of the many trails you’ll find leading through the dunes… why not keep track of how many species of bird you spot on your way?

Managed by the Cumbria Wildlife Trust, the surrounding nature reserve is also a Site of Specific Scientific Interest, which means there’s plenty to see and do in almost every direction.

If you prefer eating out, nearby Barrow-in-Furness is teeming with cafés and restaurants to try, while slightly further afield lie the many and varied charms of the Lake District.

Enjoy a hearty meal – wherever it happens to be cooked! – then settle in at The Lighthouse Hide with your loved one, for another blissful evening of relaxed conversation and epic sunset watching.

Things to note

Check in between 4pm – 10pm, check out at 10am. Due to the cottage’s position on a protected and closely monitored nature reserve, no pets are permitted. A high chair is available on request. Please note there is a long bumpy road to access the property.
