Kaywana Hall is an architectural masterpiece offering a luxury bed-and-breakfast experience. Set in its own 12 acres of woodland in Kingswear, South Devon, guests have described Kaywana Hall as a ‘hidden oasis’ – a stunning retreat where adults can relax in comfort and solitude.

Located on the site of an original 1960s building by Mervyn Seal, local architect Stan Bolt designed Kaywana Hall to retain the essential features of the original house, including the butterfly roof, while introducing exquisite contemporary elements.  Whitewashed walls and the extensive use of glass throughout create a sense of light, space and tranquillity.

Just as much thought has gone into the stunning grounds; beautiful plants, slate walkways and ambient night lighting – and, of course, the heated swimming pool – mean Kaywana Hall would not be out of place in the Hollywood Hills.

Hosts Gordon and Tony go to every length to provide a comfortable stay.  The four guestrooms – Beech, Oak, Ash and new addition The Roundhouse – have been thoughtfully furnished to the highest specification, providing luxury normally associated with 5-star hotels.  Each has its own entrance, creating a sense of detachment from the main property and allowing you to come and go as you please.

Sweets, homemade biscuits and fudge, as well as a mini-fridge containing fresh milk, bottled water and lemon, welcome you to your room.  A wide selection of teas and coffees, as well as a Nespresso machine, add that extra touch for a special stay.  The sumptuous beds are dressed with high-quality linen, perfect for relaxing back to watch the widescreen TV or listen to music on the iPod docking station.  Wi-Fi is also free if you still want some contact with the outside world!

Beech, with its king size bed, overlooks the pool, while Oak and Ash have views of the nearby woodland. These both offer super-king size beds, and Ash can be arranged to accommodate twin beds.  The en-suite bathrooms all have separate baths and showers, and the fluffy towels are divine.  Every room also has its own private outdoor seating area overlooking the beautiful grounds – perfect for unwinding with a chilled wine or beer.

The Roundhouse room also enjoys woodland views and has a particularly special bathroom with double sinks, a freestanding bath and monsoon shower – sheer bliss!

More information

In keeping with the relaxed feel of Kaywana Hall, breakfast is served at a time to suit you.  All ingredients of the English breakfast are sourced within a five-mile radius, and lighter options include fruit compote or summer berries with fresh yoghurt, depending on the season.  There’s also a fantastic range of specials – look out for eggs Benedict, scrambled egg and smoked salmon, and even kedgeree.

New to Kaywana Hall is the Pool House which is the breakfast room and in the afternoon becomes an inviting guest area with cakes, snacks and coffee machine, all complimentary for guests.

Kingswear is on your doorstep, an attractive village on the banks of the River Dart directly opposite the popular tourist destination of Dartmouth.  Home to brightly painted 19th Century villas, it is perfect for an afternoon’s wander.  A village store, post office and two good pubs – serving locally sourced food and real ales – offer every necessity you need.  From here, you can take a trip to Paignton aboard a steam train (between Easter and October), or you might head across to popular Dartmouth on one of the ferries which run back and forth all day.

Once in Dartmouth, take a speedboat ride out to sea or simply admire some of the magnificent yachts moored here.  You might even purchase one if you have the spending money!  Before heading back across the river, make sure you sample the local catch of the day in one of the many fantastic restaurants.

So, whether you are looking for unique accommodation from which to explore stunning South Devon, or you want a secluded retreat where you can simply relax in luxury, Kaywana Hall really is the ‘hidden oasis’ you’ve been searching for.
