18th century Cummertrees Church is a special place. The building’s initial footprint dates all the way back to the 13th century, in an original commission by the infamous King Robert the Bruce.

These days, the church has been sympathetically restored, retaining many of its unique features and all of its charm, to provide truly divine accommodation for up to ten people and three dogs.

Set in the tranquil and picturesque coastal village of Cummertrees, there are many magnificent walks to be taken nearby, including the Solway Coast Heritage Trail. This is also an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, meaning outstanding views are always assured.

Perhaps begin by staking your claim on your favourite bedroom!  You’ve got five to choose from, with two twin rooms on the ground floor (these can also be made into kingsize beds on request), and a further three on the first floor. Choose from a super kingsize ensuite, a kingsize and a double, all beautifully decorated and featuring cosy beds dressed in fresh linen.

There are two additional bathrooms to be found here too, along with a separate WC on the ground floor, meaning no awkward morning queues to freshen up!

Meanwhile, luxuriate in your fine surroundings, which include a bright and sociable open-plan lounge, kitchen and dining room.  A woodburner with plenty of logs means your evening catch-up chats will be wonderfully warm  and cosy, while stained glass windows flood the space with rich-coloured light by day.

The well-equipped kitchen means you can re-enact the feeding of the five thousand if you so wish! – or stick to whipping up sumptuous feasts fit for the village elders throughout your stay.  If you fancy dining al fresco, there’s a barbecue in the large shared garden area, complete with seating.

Not only is there a chance you’ll catch a glimpse of grazing deer in the garden, you’ll be accompanied by ancient gravestones, something which adds more than a little heritage and interest to your evening get-togethers.

With Sky TV, a DVD player and a PlayStation 4 console awaiting you in the lounge, rainy days are more than taken care of.  When the weather is warmer, simply take a short stroll to the nearby beach.

If this already sounds ideal, there’s even more fun to be had nearby, in the form of mountain biking, golf and an array of watersports. There are plenty of attractions too, including the Galloway Astronomy Centre, the Robert Burns Museum and Dark Skies Park to name but a few.

Return to your church for evening worship, just in time to pour a glass of communion wine as you watch the sun sinking over the whispering trees. Perhaps heaven really does exist on Earth, after all.

Things to note

Dogs are permitted to stay at a cost of £20 per dog for up to 7 nights. The main entrance gate is not the owners property so the front gate will not be locked but can be closed.
