Beauty, peace and calm combine in two romantic Cornish riverside retreats: the former Smithy and Captain's Office of a Victorian tin mine.

Okel Tor Mine consists of two very special cottage retreats, both perfectly positioned within an Ancient Monument and a World Heritage Site.

Dreamily set amongst sixteen glorious acres of wildlife-steeped woodland, the Grade II listed Count House and The Smithy are perfect for relaxation, romance and respite alike. Privately spaced, both feature outstanding views across the River Tamar to the soothing Devon hills.

Once a flourishing 19th century tin mine that also produced copper, lead and arsenic, Okel Tor Mine is located in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with a Site of Special Scientific Interest nearby that means you'll never tire of those wondrously diverse natural surroundings.

If you're bringing your four-legged friend with you, so much the better - this is the ideal location for long, scenic riverside rambles! The pubs and National Trust's tea room at Cotehele are all dog-friendly.

You'll find each cottage has been lovingly restored, and decorated in a cosy style with all the comforts of home...including a crackling log burning stove, a squishy sofa and an irresistibly comfortable bedroom with king size bed.

Of course, you'll also be able to make the most of those amazing views, with outdoor seating that's perfect for morning coffee and evening tipples.

Each cottage has its very own history too. The quirky Count House was the former mine captain's office, while The Smithy, with its vaulted ceiling and timber panelling, was once home to a forge and workshop.

Enjoy the comforts of your own kitchen and shower room, with a barbecue and a utility room with washing machine shared between the two cottages. There's a wealth of entertainment available too, from a thoughtfully-provided selection of books and DVDs, to sound system with Bluetooth and games for any competitive types.

With so much natural beauty all around, however, you might feel compelled to head outside and explore the area. Take a stroll along the river into nearby Calstock, a quaint village with narrow streets and colourful cottages...and as you're in Cornwall, the occasional stop for a pasty or a cream tea may just have to be made! You'll find two lovely pubs, a wonderful little cafe and a superb ice cream parlour too.

Carry on through the village, following the River Tamar, and you'll come to the enchanting medieval home that is the National Trust's Cotehele House - highly recommended.

If you're feeling in a more energetic mood, the Tamar Trails Centre is just nearby - why not hire a mountain bike, or head up into the woodland canopy for some truly awe-inspiring views? You can also enjoy some of Cornwall's trademark attractions, with the north and south coasts, the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan all within easy reach.

But for now, why not take a gentle stroll along the river, and say hello to the passing otters, kingfishers and badgers on your way?  Linger as long as you like - with a warm stove and a steaming cuppa waiting for you back at Okel Tor Mine, you've got all the time in the world.
