  • Bedroom: 1
  • Minimum stay: 3 nights

Embrace the open road and the simplicity of life on a truly unique gypsy caravan adventure through the Cumbrian countryside!

With Wanderlusts Gypsy Caravans, you can enjoy the rare chance of an adventure holiday with a difference – traveling in a beautiful horse-drawn, bow-top vardo, and waking up in various locations throughout this idyllic region.

A holiday like this conjures excitement for young families, romance for couples and a great deal of fun for groups of friends.  In fact, there’s no right or wrong time to take your first trip in a gypsy caravan – it’s something that everyone really will treasure.

Your trip will begin at a secluded private camp or a country pub where you can leave your car and take on your new set of wheels!  You’ll be greeted by your guide and introduced to your horse and caravan. There’s no need to worry if you’re a little unsure about driving though; your Wanderlusts guide will be there at all times whilst you are on the move and, after some instruction, you’ll have the opportunity to take the reins yourself on the quiet country roads you’ll travel throughout your journey.

This holiday is all about relaxing and enjoying the simple life, so if you’d rather sit back, take in the exquisite scenery and be lulled into relaxation by the gentle sounds of hooves clip-clopping and wooden wheels turning, that’s really no problem at all.

Your guide will escort you from camp to camp, and they’ll even set you up with a campfire before leaving for the night.  Gather round to cook your evening meal (all the pans and utensils you’ll need are provided in the caravan), and soak up the warmth as you share stories beneath the stars.

More information

Once ready for bed, your caravan awaits. With ample accommodation supplied by the cosy double bed, as well as sleeping mats for additional travellers, there’s space for everyone to bunk up together for a good night’s rest.  The handcrafted caravan is well insulated, thanks to a layer of wool between the warm inner fabric and traditional outer canvas, keeping you cosy the whole night through.

It also comes fully equipped with wind-up torches and candles, as well as a hob and kettle for your morning cup of tea.  All camps have either a compostable or outdoor toilet nearby; for washing, the provided washbowl makes for an ideal light wash, or for full immersion in nature (quite literally), a dip in a nearby stream puts a unique spin on the morning routine!

You’ll travel every other day, giving you time at each stop to explore the surrounding countryside, go swimming or walking, or just to relax in the blissful camp itself.  This might be a wildflower meadow or a private field with its own stream running from the hills, or you might stay at Hawthorne Quarry, a former stopping place for the Romany travellers of years ago.

When it’s time to move on, your guide will return to yoke up the horse and take you to your next stop.  There are no shops en route, but you may have the chance to pick up some local seasonal produce, eggs, cakes or jams.  Guests are asked to pack light for the horse’s sake, and on hills you may be asked to walk, but with such beautiful countryside to pass through, there are unlikely to be any complaints!

For those who fancy the gypsy caravan experience without the traveling, there is also the chance to stay in an in-situ caravan based at one of the camps, and for those who would rather, you can even arrange for roadside and fireside meals to be provided for you!

So whether young or old, a trip on a gypsy caravan will create memories that everyone will treasure for years to come – what’s stopping you?

Things to note

Bring your own towels, communal facilities differ slightly according to campsite, for full information check the Wanderlusts website. Prices from £200 per night for up to two adults and the first two children go free.

Please pack light for the horses’ sake!
