Walden Lodge
Wales / St Donat's, Glamorgan
Full description
Escape to serenity at Walden Lodge - a unique handcrafted retreat where the spirit of American Transcendentalism blends with the heritage of Wales, all just moments from the Glamorganshire coast.
Sleeping up to four, Walden Lodge was tailor-made for guests who seek a little more meaning to their breaks away from the bustle of life. Nestled in the shelter of the tall trees of Tresilian Wood, this hand-built, two-storey wooden cabin is one of five very special abodes you'll find at Hide at St Donat's - a place where peace, luxury and culture blend for unforgettable getaways in the Welsh countryside.
Walden Lodge represents a culmination of influences from both America and Wales. It's no coincidence that its name is inspired by Henry David Thoreau's book ‘Walden', which reflects on the beauty of living simply, surrounded by nature. And it's also no coincidence that Thoreau - a leading figure in the American Transcendental Movement - was influenced by none other than Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who himself lived in and was inspired by the magnificent Quantock Hills, which you can actually see from Walden Lodge itself.
When you first arrive at Walden Lodge, you'll notice how this exquisitely crafted home is reminiscent of prairie cabins from the days of pioneers, sending you back to a simpler, slower time. And as you step up to your balcony, take a moment to turn back and indulge in those far-reaching views across the channel to the Quantocks - truly stunning.
And throughout this stunning lodge, you'll discover an array of art and craftwork that celebrates the heritage and culture of Wales. Curl up under cosy throws crafted by Sian O'Doherty - a textile designer based in Narbeth. Linger over original artwork by Ceyfn Burgess, from an exhibition of Welsh migration to Pennsylvania. And marvel at intricate glasswork by Christian Ryan, depicting Coleridge's influence on American Transcendentalism.
The bright kitchen area is fully equipped with an electric fan oven and induction hob, a fridge-freezer and even a dishwasher, making it easy to cook and serve your favourite suppers to be enjoyed at the dining table for four. A snug settee sits beside the cosy woodburner - the perfect place for a ‘cwtch' and a catch up.
From here, a set of stained-glass doors lead into the first of Walden Lodge's two bedrooms. Featuring a double bed topped with a handwoven green-and-blue throw, this peaceful nook couldn't be better from cuddling up and savouring the sounds of the trees and wildlife that surround you. You'll also find a large bathroom on the ground floor, exquisitely finished with cream walls, grey tiles and a magnificent walk-in shower.
Upstairs is the second bedroom - a true sanctuary of serenity. Here you'll find a double bed topped with a black-and-white throw and cushions, as well as an additional comfy bunk bed - perfect for a teenager.
While you're staying at Walden Lodge, be sure to visit the Hide Pavilion - a relaxed space where guests can enjoy delectable breakfasts and evening drinks. And of course, there are four more wonderful places to stay on your return visits - namely the Bugail Hut (a stunning shepherd's hut for two, found below a tulip tree) and the three Cabans (hand-made circular cabans for two, featuring real double beds and stunning sea views).
When you're not exploring glorious Tresilian Wood, there's much more to see and do in the awe-inspiring Vale of Glamorgan. Venture into times gone by at the many nearby castles, each one shrouded in myth and mystery. Soak up the beauty of nature as you discover lush grasslands and the spectacular Jurassic Coast. And with Cardiff just 25 minutes away, you're perfectly placed for touching base with the unique culture of the Welsh capital, whether you're visiting museums, churches and castles, or shops, bars and restaurants.
Or simply indulge in the peaceful haven that is Walden Lodge, and forget that a world exists beyond Tresilian Wood. After all, when you're cocooned in this beautiful cabin, it's not very hard to do!
Things to note
