Under the Walnut Tree
England / Painswick, Gloucestershire
Full description
A soothing shepherd's hut, set on the historic grounds of a Grade I listed house, with an outdoor swimming pool and idyllic views of wildlife-steeped Gloucestershire countryside.
Dating all the way back to the 12th century, the Grade I listed Painswick Lodge is gently elevated in a Gloucestershire Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with mesmerising views that lead your gaze down to the tranquil, wildlife-steeped valley below.
The former royal hunting lodge is surrounded by immaculate English gardens and grounds that are home to magnificent Arabian horses and rare breed cattle, along with idyllic summerhouses to relax in, and a shimmering outdoor swimming pool framed by oak beams.
Boasting a grand, fascinating heritage, it was within these grounds that King Henry VIII enjoyed his long honeymoon with Anne Boleyn in 1534, and where the future Queen Elizabeth I spent her play time, exploring the gardens in childish wonder.
As its name so beautifully suggests, you'll find the romantic shepherd's hut for two secluded amongst these incredible surroundings, Under the Walnut Tree.
Perfectly positioned for you to enjoy some of the most spectacular views in rural England, you can sit back and watch as hay is made in the sunshine, or perhaps the horses idly grazing with their foals.
While it will be easy for you to imagine life as a shepherd in times gone by, watching out for their flock, you'll also find the charming hut infused with contemporary comfort and luxury. Furnishings are not only of the highest quality, but welcome conveniences that include an en-suite shower room, a two-ring gas hob, and a coolbox, will help you make the most of your relaxation time.
Later on, the 12 volt LED lights provide a soft evening glow, as you snuggle up beside the wood-burner, and the downy double bed all but guarantees a sound night's sleep.
Wake to incredible views of the sun rising over the countryside, easing yourselves into the day over coffee, birdsong and butterfly visits on the terrace... and with a welcome basket of freshly laid eggs and locally sourced bacon and bread generously provided, breakfast promises to be a heavenly treat.
If you're in the mood to explore, there is plenty to captivate you in the local area. You could start by heading into Painswick (whose church spire you'll be able to view from your bed!) Known as the ‘Queen of the Cotswolds', you can meander along its narrow streets, perhaps stopping in the historic local inn for a drink.
Stroud, just three miles away, boasts artisan shops an award-winning weekly farmers' market, while the spa town of Cheltenham is host to a programme of festivals, of just about every description.
Yet if all that sounds far too energetic, you can simply wander over to the summerhouse, stocked with books, a comfy sofa, and even more mesmerising views. Watch the comings and goings of the local wildlife, before taking a leisurely afternoon dip in that beautiful pool, then firing up the barbecue to help you welcome in another unforgettable sunset.
Things to note
Check in from 4pm, check out by 11am. Children and pets are not permitted. Please note that there is a plug socket/charging point in the hut.
