Ty Cwch
Wales / Aberporth, Ceredigion
Full description
A unique, award-winning architect designed ‘boat house' that's ideal for an adventure-packed beach break, next to the invigorating Welsh Coast Path.
Ty Cwch (that's Welsh for ‘boat house') is a seriously innovative, eco-friendly glamping-style holiday home for up to twelve guests, and, indeed, has even been awarded a Tourism Innovation Award by Mid Wales Tourism and Cardiff Project of the Year Highly Commended by Specifi.
Enticingly secluded in a valley facing Cardigan Bay the small-and-peaceful Cwymtdu Beach is an idyllic ‘get away from it all' coastal retreat for relaxation lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and thrill-seekers alike.
Cleverly created by a local architect who specialises in sustainable design, the two-storey haven has been constructed from a perfectly stacked set of Larch clad shipping containers, and adorned with sail-like canvas canopies. Together with its huge, gleaming porthole windows, your first impression of Ty Cwch is sure to be ship-shape!
Inside awaits a glorious collection of heated and insulated pods, all furnished with upcycled materials, and cheerily accented with vibrant pops of colour throughout.
Discover the communal Cooking, Sitting, and Cleaning pods on the ground floor, home to a well-equipped kitchen and dining area, a comfy sofa space, and essential washing and drying facilities for cleaning your clothes after long days of activity. There are even two outdoor showers - perfect for that evening freshen-up - and a deck and garden for sunset-watching over drinks.
You'll find three sleeping pods upstairs, each housing four cosy bunks - so you can re-enact that fun ‘sleepover with friends' feeling from childhood! There are two more shower rooms on this level, which means there'll be no awkward queues for the bathroom each morning.
All that's left to do now is plan out your days. If you're staying in, there's plenty of at-home entertainment to be found, in the form of music, videos, games and toys (not to mention WiFi and internet access).
Yet with so much adventure waiting on the doorstep, you may choose to spend as much time as you can in the Great Outdoors!
You could start by walking or cycling the Welsh Coast Path, leading you right from the house, through woodland and across wide open countryside (hop on the Cardi Bach bus to extend the route all the way out to Cardigan or New Quay).
Meanwhile, you can indulge in all manner of thrilling water sports close by, from kayaking and sailing, to surfing and diving - and you can even store your own boating equipment at the house if needed. Fine Mid Wales surfing beaches are accessible, such as Borth, Abertystwyth and Llangrannog, as well as Whitesands near St Davids, in Pembrokeshire.
There's a network of qualified instructors on hand if you prefer guided activities, ranging from seal and dolphin watching for wildlife lovers, and coasteering, abseiling, and gorge walking for the adrenaline junkies.
Yet if you find the idea of all that activity just a little too much...how about a visit to Wales' newest distillery near Llandysul instead, for a restorative seaweed gin?
