A vintage timber-framed retreat, filled with historic charm and colourful creature comforts galore, beautifully set in the beating heart of ancient Rye.
  • Sleeps: 8
  • Bedrooms: 4
  • Bathrooms: 3
  • Minimum stay: 2-3 nights

A veritable treasure-trove of fascinating period features and jewel-toned designer accessories, The Old Stout House occupies a convenient position in the heart of bustling Rye.

Mere moments from the train station, and within easy reach of an array of pubs and eateries, you can leave the car at home, giving your designated driver a well-deserved break!

Originally built in the 1700s, the timber-framed, black-clad former public house cuts a striking dash among Rye’s ancient cobbled streets. Sleeping up to eight lucky guests, it’s an ideal retreat for family stays that demand a little something extra… and as well-behaved pets are permitted too, nobody has to stay at home.

Filled with colour and curiosities, there are three large kingsize bedrooms and one twin room to choose from – two boasting en-suite bathrooms – and a stylish dining room to congregate in. This used to be the pub scullery, only looking around at the designer tableware it now sports, you’d never know it!

Accommodation is generously spaced across four storeys. You’ll find each one filled with sensory treats, from the sleek Italian stove-top espresso maker in the lower ground-floor kitchen, to the indulgent slipper bath in the top-floor family bathroom.

Unwind in your chosen bedroom’s gloriously-furnished reading nook, or in the heart of the house: the ground-floor sitting room.  Festooned with butter-soft velvet sofas in a range of vibrant colours, there’s a beautiful bay window to gaze out of, and a selection of games to challenge your competitive spirits.

Of course, you’ve always got the option to pour a glass of wine and wander out to the south-facing Mediterranean-style garden, instead. Fully enclosed, and exquisitely dotted with mature palms and olive trees, it’ll be easy to spirit your souls away from hectic life back home.

More information

Savour al fresco meals in the summer sunshine, or pull up an outdoor cushion and a snuggly Tweedmill blanket if the weather turns a little chilly. If you’re staying outside to watch the arrival of the stars, mains-wired festoon lighting will add a soft, hazy glow to the proceedings.

If you’re still interested in getting out and exploring the local area, you’ll find plenty to discover in Rye, the town often referred to as “one of England’s best-kept secrets.” Search for coveted antique finds along the cobbled streets, perhaps stopping for coffee and cake in one of many quaint cafés on your way.

Perfectly positioned between coast and country, you’re also ideally-placed to explore further afield, whether that’s spending a day at Camber Sands, or bird-watching at Dungeness… whatever takes your collective fancy!

Things to note

Please note that there is no TV, though there is a TV licence to stream shows and movies if needed. Due to the house’s vintage timber-frame construction, some traffic noise will be audible, particularly during rush hour. There are narrow, steep, and twisting stairs in some places, so young children must be supervised at all times.  There is no private parking at the property, but parking is available within a few minutes’ walk.
