Full description
A 17th century fairytale retreat with a thatched roof, secluded in the woods on one of the highest points of the Sussex Weald, for spectacular views of the North and South Downs.

A visit to The Forest House is not unlike stepping right into the pages of a children's fairytale.

Even your approach will feel deliciously magical, since the listed, thatched-roof retreat is accessed through wildlife-steeped woods, along a tranquil private track... making you feel like you've discovered a ‘secret' haven!

Nestled just outside the quaint village of Turners Hill, and dating all the way back to the 17th century, The Forest House is also secluded on one of the Sussex Weald's highest points, which makes for lovely views of both the North and South Downs.

Inside awaits a perfect marriage of old and new, with plenty of hand-selected accessories and antiques. Delightful original features include ancient beams, vaulted ceilings, and inglenook fireplaces, while velvet sofas, luxury linen, and excellent Wi-Fi mean you'll also enjoy a touch of modern opulence.

The farmhouse kitchen is a joy to cook in, with its instantly welcoming feel, and its gleaming appliances, including a stainless steel range cooker. Although you can savour more formal feasts in the open plan lounge and dining area, here you'll find a reclaimed kitchen table with mismatched rustic chairs - ideal for casual, chatty breakfasts!

What about bedrooms, you may ask?  Well, while the retreat sleeps up to 10 people, one double bed is nestled in an al fresco hut that's only suitable for sleeping in during the summer... so during the winter, up to 8 guests can sleep soundly inside.

Here you can choose from four cosy double bedrooms, and one attic room with two single beds (please note the attic room is accessed by very steep and narrow steps).

After a dreamy night's sleep, freshen up in the downstairs bathroom - there's a separate shower and loo in another outside hut, if you really want to feel bright and energised! - and start the important business of planning your day.

If you don't want to stray too far, the surrounding gardens, pond, and woodland are a haven for wildlife, including foxes, squirrels, and deer, and there are plenty of local nature walks to test the sturdiest of boots (how about an invigorating hike on the South Downs Way, before refuelling in a traditional country pub?)

Looking for something more relaxed? Nymans is a Grade II-listed National Trust garden set around a romantic house and ruins - complete with a licensed café - and there are plenty of art galleries and antique shops to browse in the village.

Whichever route you choose, it'll lead you temptingly home to The Forest House by evening, where you can catch up with your loved ones in blissful, timeless comfort.

Things to note

Minimum 3-night stay. Up to two well-behaved dogs are permitted (at an extra cost per dog), but please do not bring dogs who will chase the local wildlife. There is no TV at the house, but excellent Wi-Fi. The garden features an unfenced pond, so children must be supervised at all times.
