The Bolthole
England / Pagham Beach, West Sussex
Full description
A super-cool, first-class retreat that's rich in home comforts, expertly crafted around a Victorian railway carriage that's right on the beach at Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve.
Filled with both heart and style, The Bolthole is a unique retreat that's been beautifully constructed around a Victorian railway carriage, and superbly positioned in the heart of Pagham Harbour RSPB Nature Reserve.
(You'll be so close to the sea, in fact, that you'll be able to dip your toes into the water from the bottom of the beachfront firepit area!)
Although there's plenty to remind you of blissful times gone by, you'll soon find that The Bolthole is anything but a relic from the past. Dripping with contemporary style, there are plenty of Instagram-able touches, including funky pineapple wall sconces, up-to-the-minute grey panelling, and stylish industrial lighting.
The cosy living room features a squishy modular sofa and armchairs, with a wealth of evening entertainment that includes a Roberts radio, a Netflix-equipped TV with an Amazon Fire Stick, and an Alexa music speaker to help you set the perfect mood.
Cook up a storm in the sociable kitchen, complete with a sofa-style breakfast bar for casual morning chats over a Nespresso coffee (there's even an Aeroccino milk frother for that ‘urban cappuccino bar' feel!) You'll also be greeted by a welcome pack of essentials, including bread, eggs and milk - oh, and not forgetting a ready supply of marshmallows for toasting later on.
After enjoying a home-cooked dinner in the conservatory dining room, which faces the sea, you can head outside to watch the sun sinking over the water from the comfort of your very own furnished beach firepit... what bliss!
Back on board, there are four elegant bedrooms to choose from, some of which are positioned under the original bowed carriage ceilings, for an authentic ‘sleeper car' atmosphere.
The master double features an en-suite shower room, while the second double is equipped with a cot bed for an infant. There's also a cheerful twin room, and a charming third double.
After a sound night's sleep, freshen up in the family bathroom, housed in the original carriage and featuring an indulgent bath with shower over, and a stack of fluffy towels.
What to do with your day? Well, you could let the kids loose on the sunken trampoline and table tennis table in the back garden, as you enjoy a second coffee on the sea-facing decking. Later, why not indulge in a spot of crabbing on the beach together?
If you'd rather explore, you can head into the village, or take a 40-minute walk around the harbour to the Mr. and Mrs. Smith-approved Crab and Lobster... ideal for delicious lunches and dinners you don't have to cook yourselves!
And there's always the bustling cathedral city of Chichester, ideal for shopping and coffee-stops, just 15 minutes away.
However you choose to spend your time at The Bolthole, you're sure to find it aptly-named... so much so, you'll be booking your next first-class hideaway-stay just as soon as you return home!
