Thatched Hat
England / Norley Wood, Hampshire
Full description
An idyllic family cottage with a thatched roof (and a pet guinea fowl) nestled on the edge of coastal farmland in a quaint New Forest hamlet that's strewn with free-roaming ponies.
At first glance, a family break spent at Thatched Hat could seem like a traditional country cottage holiday in the New Forest.
Yet once you've looked a little closer, you'll soon notice plenty of glorious quirks that will make this one of the most unique stays you've ever experienced!
Nestled in the tranquil, charming hamlet of Norley Wood, surrounded by coastal farmland and the New Forest National Park, this is a place where cows, donkeys, and ponies stroll the lanes freely... often coming to a stop at the cottage for a peaceful nap in the driveway!
There's even a pet guinea fowl who lives in the mature, south-facing garden (so unfortunately, even well-behaved dogs aren't permitted to stay.)
Sleeping up to six guests, the cottage is styled in a mesmerising blend of friendly owner Fiona's love of the local area, and the many years she spent living in the wilderness of Africa.
Along with mod-cons, deep sofas, soft linens, and charming views from traditional casement windows, you'll discover woven baskets, Masai necklaces, and antique travel books, along with pictures taken by Fiona's son, who is a wildlife photographer and safari guide.
Bedroom-wise, you'll have three to choose from. There's a cheerful kingsize master room downstairs, with room for a travel cot, and views of the garden. Upstairs you'll find a second kingsize master that faces the garden and fields beyond, and there's also a smaller double room with green views.
Conveniently, there is also a bathroom on each floor... which means no awkward queues in the morning!
After a sound night's sleep, prepare some fresh coffee and a round of toast on the AGA, and get ready for a fun-filled day exploring the local area.
Take a wander through the fields into the hamlet, where you'll find a fabulous rope swing the kids will love. A little further on lies a friendly local pub... or you could head for the beach instead, via the back garden and through more lush fields!
If you've brought your bike then you're in serious luck, as there are plenty of excellent trails that begin right from the door. Why not cycle into nearby Lymington, a town that often features in The Times' ‘Top 10 Places to Live in the UK', with very good reason.
However you choose to while away your time, you're sure to marvel at the blissful, slowed-down pace of life you'll discover here, in a place that feels like your very own holiday world.
Things to note
Check in from 5pm, check out before 10am. Pets strictly not permitted. The garden features a deep pond - please supervise young children at all times. Please note that the owner calls in from time to time and will sometimes stay in the annexe, though this will not disturb your stay (if you do feel like chatting, you'll find she is an excellent source of information about the local area!)
