Unique 17th Century thatched cob cottage in Devon's Cockington Country Park.
If you are asked to picture your perfect chocolate-box cottage, there's a rather good chance you'd picture Higher Lodge. Nestled in Cockington Country Park, this stunning listed home is the quintessential English cottage, making for a fabulous retreat to remember.
Dating back to the 17th century, Higher Lodge once served as a gatehouse to the historic Cockington Estate. Today, this gorgeous thatched, cob cottage is now a unique holiday home for up to four people.
Every effort has been made to maintain Higher Lodge's fairy-tale appearance, conserving this little piece of history for your pleasure. The pitched, thatched roof, leaded windows, even the cob itself, have all been perfectly preserved so this home appears today as it did nearly 400 years ago.
Inside, Higher Lodge has been lovingly refurbished to offer clean, modern and comfortable accommodation. Light and airy décor, soft carpets and high quality fixtures and fittings combine to create a wonderfully welcoming home. The original beams can still be seen throughout the house, and sloping ceilings retain a sense of the cottage's history.
Despite its cutesy exterior, you'll find Higher Lodge to be deceptively spacious inside. The cosy sitting room has more than enough space to relax on the soft sofa and armchairs, as well as a gas stove for chilly days. The large, country-style kitchen has been beautifully finished with every appliance you'll need for self-catering, including a dishwasher. There's also a washing machine and tumble dryer for your convenience. Enjoy the chance to dine together around the circular, shabby chic dining table, which seats four comfortably.
Upstairs, two beautiful bedrooms await, both with en-suite shower rooms. The spacious Master room is at the front of the house, so comes with the added benefit of those two gorgeous arched windows. Elegant drapes help give this room a romantic feel, and the super king size bed can be configured as two twin beds if required.
The second bedroom is furnished with a king size bed, finished with soft, white linen and fluffy pillows. Positioned opposite the large window, enjoy lazy lie-ins with the sunshine spilling in and the sound of birdsong from your bed.
Outside, Higher Lodge has the added benefit of its own enclosed garden, complete with a patio and wrought-iron garden furniture. Make the most of the south-west weather with a pot of coffee, the morning papers, and this beautiful space for ultimate relaxation.
Higher Lodge is just one of the beautifully preserved buildings you'll find in the 460-acre Cockington Estate, which is now a designated wildlife site. This gives you full access to the country park at all times, leaving you free to wander through the apple orchard, visit the Norman church, explore the manor house and gardens, or simply sit and watch a game of cricket at the grounds opposite your cottage.
The estate itself is a spot on the notorious Agatha Christie Literary Trail, for she visited this exquisite area frequently in her youth. The outbuildings of the manor house are also worth a peek; now an acclaimed craft centre, find talented glassblowers, ironmongers, artists and even chocolate makers here.
The ancient fishing and farming village of Cockington is an utterly charming place to visit, and you'll quickly see why it's one of the most photographed villages in England. The seafront is just half a mile from Higher Lodge, and also within easy distance are the popular destinations of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.
A holiday at Higher Lodge combines everything for ‘the perfect stay'. With the seaside and countryside, a picture postcard village on your doorstep, more than enough ways to fill your days, and of course, a truly unique home-from-home, what more could you ask for?
