Greatstone Beach House
England / Dungeness, Kent
Full description
A stylish and welcoming retreat, with direct access to the vast sandy beach and dunes within the Dungeness National Nature Reserve.
Part of the wild and unique Dungeness National Nature Reserve, Greatstone is home to a fine, sandy beach that stretches mesmerisingly out for over two miles.
Not only that, its dramatic coastal sand dunes are teeming with rare and diverse plant life, and are a designated Site of Specific Scientific Interest.
Offering direct access to the beach and dunes, Greatstone Beach House sits right by the sea, for sweeping views that promise to remain in your mind's eye forever... particularly when they're enjoyed from the huge, furnished terrace.
Sleeping up to eight guests and their two well-behaved dogs, the A-frame retreat is owned by an interior designer and an architect, so you can expect both fabulous use of space, and detailed attention to style throughout.
The enormous first floor kitchen, dining, and living space is sumptuous and relaxed, with wooden flooring, cosy furnishings, and elegant, well-chosen accessories. If it's not sunny enough to sit outside, you can simply light the fire, and get lost in watching storm clouds from the large glass doors, instead.
The kitchen area comes equipped with a central island, and all the handy appliances you'd expect, including a gas hob, an electric oven, a microwave, and that all-important dishwasher.
There are five comfy bedrooms on the ground floor; four doubles, and one twin. Each bed is dressed in fresh, natural linen, for a sound night's sleep. You'll also discover natural cotton towels in the two ground-floor bath and shower rooms.
Let the dogs run wild in the garden, and when it's time to explore, simply open the gate for direct access to those wild and wondrous sand dunes, straight to the beach.
There, you'll find that the fresh wind and fine, flat sands mean you can indulge in all kinds of land and watersports, from land yachting (Greatstone is often cited as one of the finest land yachting sites in the UK), sailing, and kite surfing.
If you prefer an invigorating stroll, the beach runs adjacent to the Kent Coastline Walk, or you could save your legs altogether, and hop on the nostalgic Romney to Dymchurch steam railway.
Enjoy history and heritage? Then why not pay a visit to the imposing Sound Mirrors; large concrete structures that were designed as an early warning system for Britain to detect enemy aircraft.
And of course, the unique National Nature Reserve is all around, home to shimmering lakes, diverse flora and fauna, and one of the largest shingle landscapes in the world.
If you've brought your telescope along, you can spend the evening out on the deck, counting the stars as they appear in that vast night sky. Otherwise, simply kick back with a sundowner and your favourite people, and count your blessings instead.

Check in after 3pm, check out by 11am. Please note that the house is not suitable for infants under 2 years of age.
