Full description
Step into a unique fantasy-world retreat, lovingly created by a visionary artist and filled with quirky surprises, secluded in the scenic Shropshire town of Bridgnorth.

A visionary artist and inventor, Antony Dracup lived in the historic Shropshire town of Bridgnorth - known as "the cradle of the Industrial Revolution" - for over 20 years.

During this time, he transformed his beloved home from a common-or-garden railway cottage, into a jaw-dropping fantasy retreat that's a jaw-dropping work of art in itself.

Restored further by the current owners, who have added a wealth of magical surprises and ‘Alice in Wonderland'-themed accessories, every room feels like a mesmerising world of its own.

The cosy living space transports you beautifully back in time, with its art nouveau lighting, vintage art wall, huge chess-piece ornaments, and a refurbished, vibrantly-upholstered 1940s sofa-bed.

Wander through the ‘Station Master' door, created by Antony Dracup himself, and into the Great Western Railway-themed kitchen (thankfully, without any curled buffet-car sandwiches in sight!)

From here, you can access the breakfast room. A glorious Severn Valley Railway-inspired space that invites the outside in, sunshine floods through the skylight above, while hand-crafted travel accessories make you feel as though you're about to embark upon a thrilling journey...

...straight into the Knight's Cavern, a spectacular cave-room that was hand-carved by Antony Dracup. His grand sandstone arches and pillars have been adorned with glinting chandeliers and antique church sconces, to evoke an authentic medieval atmosphere as you take your seats at the solid wooden dining table.

Just head upstairs to experience even more amazingness on the first floor, including a hypnotic Art Room - with a 360-degree, Antony Dracup-created mural of Bridgnorth, and a centrally-positioned swivel-chair for the best possible views.

The soundproofed bedroom ‘lair', meanwhile, is styled to resemble an iconic fantasy-adventure tale. A tranquil, nature-inspired space, here you'll find a unique raw-wood bed and hotel-quality bedding, to lull you softly into a sound, silent night's sleep.

When you wake up, complete your morning freshen-up routine in the ‘boiler room' bathroom, complete with industrial-style décor and an indulgent rain shower.

After a hearty breakfast, why begin an epic quest of your own, and explore Bridgnorth? Charles I once declared the view from the High Town as "the finest in all my kingdom", while an iron footbridge takes you straight over to the actual Severn Valley Railway Station!

Take a nostalgic steam train journey to the magnificent Severn Gorge to the south, or steal yourselves back to Dracup's Railway Cottage, and immerse yourselves in wonderland for a little while longer.

Things to note

Regrettably, the cottage is not child or pet-friendly. Please note that although the kitchen, bathroom, and a comfy sofa bed are located downstairs, there are lots of steep stairs and small spaces that may be difficult for guests with reduced mobility.

Tried and tested

"This is not a base for exploring Bridgnorth, this is an amazing cottage to be explored. There is literally so much to take in and absorb in this quirky and unique home. Not only does Antony Dracup's legacy live on here, the cottage itself has been restored to create a magical experience of its own. The personal touches are exceptional. It has been an absolute privilege and a pleasure to stay in Dracup's Cottage, and an excellent choice of a place to stay to celebrate our 20th wedding Anniversary. Thank you!"

"This is stunning. To stay here is a priviledge. It feels so wonderful to walk down the street, open the front door and enter a whole new world of enchantment. Every detail and comfort has been thought of with great care. Perfection doesn't happen very often but it is found here in Dracup's Cottage. Thank you so much."

"Being a painter and decorator myself I really appreciate the minute detail achieved here. All I can say about that is - Thank heaven my customers don't ask me for this level of detail! Also, thank you for getting the place so immaculate before our arrival. We really were blown away by all the little treats left out for us, thank you!"
