A master architect-designed gem with a lava-rock hot tub, gently elevated over the Waiaka Stream for idyllic Hawaiian ocean and volcano views.
  • Sleeps: 6
  • Bedrooms: 3
  • Bathrooms: 4
  • Minimum stay: 5 nights

Gently elevated over the Waiaka Stream, Cornwell House (also known as Sandy Simms House) is the only house in Hawaii to have been crafted by the pioneering 20th century master architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Designed to work in harmony with both humanity and its unique environment (a Lloyd Wright-created philosophy famously known as ‘organic architecture’), the spectacular retreat is expertly built into a hill, with a second floor that appears to ‘float’ beautifully over the curved living space.

Not only can you savour sweeping ocean views from the windows and doors that span the retreat’s entire length, but the incredible panoramic vista takes in three of the Big Island’s iconic volcanoes: Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Hualalai.

The visual delights continue inside, with unusual rounded walls, Cherokee-red concrete floors, and licensed reproductions of original Lloyd Wright-designed furniture that include his celebrated Barrel and Origami chairs.

Meanwhile, well-placed skylights allow natural light to flood warmly inside, as you open a good book and curl up in one of the many comfy, custom-built seating spaces you’ll find dotted throughout the house.

Later on, cook up a storm in the gorgeous kitchen, with its array of upgraded appliances, and then enjoy the resulting feasts either in the sociable dining area, or outside on the scenic terrace.

You’ll also find plenty of al fresco seating areas that are ideal for lazy afternoon chats, along with a hammock for that all-important siesta, and even a small soccer field for the kids to run riot in!
