Full description
A historic World War Two telephone bunker, transformed into a sustainable and design-led family retreat with captivating stories to tell, secluded beneath the coastal dunes in Hook of Holland.
Brimming with fascinating tales, the Vinetaduin is a Hook of Holland monument featuring a vast network of bunkers that depict four layers of military history.
Secluded beneath the wild dunes that line the coast, within the protected Hollandse Duinen National Park, the landscape teems with nature, from melodic dune birds to scurrying sand lizards and natterjack toads.
In collaboration with a team of restorative architects and progressive designers, the German telephone bunker, which dates back to 1943, has been creatively transformed into a Cocondo - a peaceful and modern family retreat with a unique, historic story to tell.
(The proceeds from your stay will not only help preserve the surrounding nature and heritage, but contributes towards the plan to create a network of Cocondos, for a seaside holiday with a meaningful difference).
Located by the entrance to the wide, sandy beach, and boasting a roof that reconstructs that awe-inspiring dune landscape, the bunker's restoration remains true to its original construction, for a genuine impression of sleeping within a story.
So as not to disturb the surrounding nature, natural and circular materials have been used wherever possible, and the minimalist retreat makes effective use of space, with light and cheerful décor throughout.
Sleeping up to two adults and two children, the original telephone switchboard room has been lovingly crafted into a luxurious underground double bedroom, while a box bed that makes clever use of the windows is ideal for one adult or two children (though a comfy futon is also on hand, if the kids don't want to share!)
Facilities include a well-equipped kitchen, and a dining area with a curved ceiling and contemporary lighting, for long, laughter-filled chats over good food. There's also a piping hot shower, complete with fluffy towels and toiletries, and you'll even have Wi-Fi during your stay.
After a sound night's sleep, you'll find the furnished front terrace is perfect for relaxed morning coffee, as you plan out the day ahead.
The digital handbook will fill you in on the area's delights, which include a range of restaurants and beach pavilions to while away your time in, and unique sightseeing spots such as the Storm Surge Barrier and the Old Lighthouse.
You can also learn more about the military history of Hook of Holland with a visit to nearby Fort 1881, the best preserved armoured fort in the Netherlands, and which played a crucial role in World War Two.
When you've finished, you can retreat to your very own piece of history, and prepare for another blissfully atmospheric evening by the sea.

Minimum 2-night stay, to begin on a weekday. Check in from 2pm, check out by 11am. Pets are not permitted. 60 euro cleaning fee is also applicable.
