A 12th century Suffolk monastery, transformed into a jaw-dropping haven of romantic country style for the ultimate in large group stays.

Recently declared by the style bible Vogue as "one of the most romantic houses in England", Butley Priory was originally constructed all the way back in 1171, with its first visitor said to be none other than King Henry III. A regular haunt of historic nobility, Mary Tudor later enjoyed many a picnic supper in the Priory's beautiful gardens.

After suffering many years of sad decline, the Priory was given a new lease of life by the famed architect W.D. Caröe, who helped transform the ruins into a Suffolk country house fit for the most discerning of guests.

Featuring carefully preserved features, including a breathtaking armorial frieze and stone vaulted arches, the Priory now boasts eight sumptuous and characterful bedrooms, suitable for families, couples, and singles.

As if that wasn't enough, you'll be surrounded by eight acres of private parkland, plenty of magical forest walks to get joyfully lost in nearby, and the windswept Suffolk coast in easy reach.

Enjoy feasts fit for royalty, either whipped up yourselves in the glorious Aga kitchen created from the Priory's original Georgian annexe, or take advantage of the catering services on offer, and enjoy breaking bread with your loved ones in the stunning dining room. With its baby grand piano and garden views, you're sure to feel as though you've been dropped straight into an episode of Downton Abbey.

All that's left to do is light the huge, open fireplace in the drawing room, and relax together over a tipple or two!

When it's finally time to turn in, simply take the stairs and choose from two enormous family bedrooms, both equipped with a large double bed, a double sofa bed, and a single day bed. There are two more double bedrooms and a single here, while a further set of stairs will lead you to the top floor, on which you'll discover two additional double rooms, and a stylish single.

Each bedroom is uniquely styled for comfort, with goose down duvets and pure cotton bed linen that will make drifting off to sleep a real treat to look forward to. Four come with en-suite facilities...  and one bathroom even features a glistening chandelier, for the ultimate in indulgent relaxation!

What to do by day? You could begin by taking a morning turn around the grounds, which are steeped in history. Indeed, legend has it that a silver coffin is buried there, containing the body of the third Earl of Suffolk.

Yet if you're in the mood to travel slightly further afield, you'll find plenty more to occupy your time, including a visit to the picture-perfect coastal town of Aldeburgh, a wide selection of mouth-watering restaurants, and enchanting nature walks peppered with castles.

(Failing that, you've always got the option of simply relaxing in your luxurious country retreat, with a good book and an even better glass of wine!)
