The Welsh Gatehouse
Inspire your creative spirit in Grade II listed, castle-style Monmouthshire accommodation for two, exquisitely steeped in centuries of history and romance.
For a blissfully tranquil romantic break infused with authentic medieval-style luxury, head for the South Wales city of Monmouthshire, where you'll discover a beautiful period property that contains over seven hundred years of history within its imposing walls.
Originally constructed in the time of King Edward I at around 1270, The Welsh Gatehouse's two elegant towers, arched windows, high ceilings and gently curved walls will make you feel as though you've been magically transported back in time to become medieval royalty yourselves, in your very own castle-style quarters that feature all the amenities you might expect from a more modern hotel suite!
Approach the Gatehouse through immaculate grounds bursting with fresh plants, flowers and bird life, via flagstone pathways and through an external gate, and enter your privately welcoming haven from times past, lovingly brought into the present day with light-attracting white painted walls and contemporary fixtures and fittings.
A steep spiral staircase will lead you to the first floor, where you'll discover a cosy lounge area complete with traditional fireplace, wood burner and a sofa that's perfect for curling up on, along with an obligatory glass of mead.
The bright, homely kitchen area contains all you need to prepare your very own medieval banquets, with a charming dining table situated by the window for you to survey soothing green gardens as you enjoy your meals. Perhaps indulge in dining al fresco on balmier nights, with a dedicated barbecue area and outdoor furniture just waiting to be enjoyed.
Back inside, the roomy bathroom handily doubles as a wetroom, containing a warming shower, toilet and sink. Climb the companionway ladder to your beautifully-dressed galleried bedroom area, featuring mood lighting and a comfy double bed.
Wooden steps will lead you to the second floor, featuring a pretty dressing room and luggage area. A few more steps will reveal an exit door that opens onto the jewel in the Gatehouse's crown - the very top of the tower, with its wonderful viewing platform that looks out over the lush grounds and Courtyard House. Perfect for stargazing by night...why not see if you can spot the occasional shooting star or two?
Luxuriously secluded as it is, you'll soon also find The Welsh Gatehouse is a wonderful base for exploring everything South Wales has to offer. The Wye Valley provides a stunning backdrop to Chepstow Racecourse, just a few minutes away by car - perfect for a day at the races with a scenic difference!
The Food Farm Shop, also at Chepstow, is a treasure-trove of fresh local produce, and includes a café for a refreshing pit stop. You'll find plenty of local dining options to choose from nearby, including local favourite the Woodland Tavern.
Why not take a stroll through the Garden at Moynes Court, adjacent to the Gatehouse and filled with seasonal flowers and beautiful birds? And for those who love to be beside the seaside, Clevedon or Penarth beaches aren't too far away by car.
Of course...on rainy days you can always stay inside and watch your creativity thrive. Acclaimed poet David Whyte has been a visitor to the Gatehouse, along with many other creative types - so don't forget to pack your notepaper and quill!
So for a true escape from hectic life in the present day, come and luxuriate in the calmness of times past, with a regally romantic stay at The Welsh Gatehouse.

"Couldn't have asked for more - we had a fantastic time! We were welcomed with a lovely generous welcome basket and the facilities were...excellent! We were left alone (much better than being overlooked) - we miss it and would love to go again.""Your Gatehouse is beautiful and so warm and welcoming. There is something magical about sitting in front of the fire on a stormy evening. A tastefully modernised piece of history."
"We have had an unforgettable weekend break - we got engaged in candlelit on the Turret and the setting could not have been more perfect."
