Remote retreats don't get much more perfect than the Lighthouse Keeper's cottage at Eshaness Lighthouse.
Perched on the northwest coast of mainland Shetland, indulge in the peace of this secluded haven, an hour from the capital of Lerwick.
Eshaness Lighthouse offers the very best of Shetland's scenery and wildlife, all the while giving the chance to escape at this coastal outpost. With no visible neighbours, it's a place to curl up among homely comforts and enjoy your own company, as the wind whips round and the waves crash below.
Sleeping up to six people, the striking light tower and cottage are a truly welcoming sight on arrival. Inside, every care has been taken to create a whimsical home-from-home. Scenic and historic pictures on the wall and personal touches complement the cottage's simple style, creating a relaxed and cosy sanctuary for guests.
Eshaness Lighthouse was also the one-time home of American author Sharma Krauskopf, and you can see examples of her work throughout the cottage. Krauskopf loved the remoteness of Eshaness, and wrote The Last Light House here; there's no doubt you'll also see why she fell in love with this place.
The lounge offers a large, comfortable social space, complete with an inviting sofa, television, and DVD player. This bright and airy room is a welcome, restful retreat after a long day spent walking and sightseeing in the Northmavine area. A large dining table seats six comfortably; it's the perfect place for enjoying home-cooked meals and savouring after-dinner drinks late into the evening.
The fully equipped kitchen has everything you need for self-catering during your stay. Supplies of tea, coffee, milk, sugar, and delicious oatcakes are provided for your arrival - the perfect antidote to a long journey. Or, if you prefer something a little stronger, wash your oatcake down with a complementary local ale - delicious!
There are three comfortable bedrooms at Eshaness Lighthouse - one double, one twin, and one bunk-bed room, ideal for children. A cot can also be placed in any one of these spacious rooms. Sleep peacefully in the knowledge you couldn't be more snug and secure in your comfy bed, even on the wildest and stormiest of nights.
The large family bathroom comes complete with a bath and shower, and a useful utility room is equipped with a washing machine and dryer.
Located atop some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the UK, indulge in unbeatable views from your cottage and beyond. The cliffs below are a Special Site of Scientific Interest, due to the tens of thousands of seabirds that nest here in the summer. Watch fulmars float on the air currents above, and below, keep a keen eye for seals, otters, porpoises, and even dolphins and whales as they visit the coastal waters.
Spend your days exploring the wilds of Northmavine, where expanses of peat and heather make a home for hares, rabbits, polecats, and a wide variety of birdlife. Anglers can fish in the lochs, and may even spot a red-throated diver or two. The peninsula itself was formed from the remains for an ancient volcano, and one of the best ways to explore is via the self-guided trail, ‘Shetland's Volcano'. There are also many more geological wonders to discover, including the Holes o' Scrada and Grind o' da Navir.
If you do want to touch base with civilisation, your nearest neighbours are at the Braewick Café, where you can enjoy delicious lunches and dinners. Nearby Hillswick offers a small shop, café, seal sanctuary, and a hotel with a bar and restaurant. The larger town of Brae is 25 minutes away, with shops, restaurants and an indoor swimming pool.
It's easy to see why so many fall in love with Eshaness, and you will too. Detached from the world, indulge in the wonder of the scenery, the power of nature, and the peace and tranquillity of Eshaness Lighthouse.
Things to noteNo pets permitted (except guide dogs), highchair and cot provided for infants.
Tried and tested
Unique opportunity to stay in a truly beautiful location.
Easy to book, very accommodating management and a chance to disconnect from the
world. We highly recommend the area to hikers and anyone wanting a break in a
gorgeous place. The entire trip was an adventure - from the overnight ferry to
the drive out.

Fantastic stay in a fantastic location. The lighthouse is so
full of character and the location unbelievable. Wonderful walks from the
doorstep. We did not move our car for 3 days. Accommodation fully equipped and
extremely warm and cosy... Highly recommended.

The setting is stunning, changing with the light from moment
to moment, but once you've stepped inside Eshaness Lighthouse you'll be
reluctant to leave... A wonderfully relaxing place to rest with the family!
