Go off-grid in a quirky and romantic ‘hobbit hole' for two, lovingly hand-built into the rolling green hills of Washington.

Time to turn off that phone and power down that laptop, as you grab your loved one and step into the pages of a fantasy tale.

Or at least, that's exactly how you'll feel as you spirit yourselves away to Underground Hygge, an exquisite ‘hobbit hole' nestled right into the Columbia Gorge mountainside in sleepy Orondo, Washington. Known for its sweet-scented fruit orchards, the views here are truly exceptional, and hardly touched by time.

The house was painstakingly hand-built by its friendly owner, Kristie, and is rich in both scenery, imagination, and detail. Even your arrival will feel pleasingly authentic to Tolkien's self-created world, as you travel across the mountainside feeling blissfully far from civilisation (walking sticks are provided to help you up the path and on towards the house).

You'll feel like Bilbo Baggins himself as you reach Underground Hygge, with its cheery yellow walls, grassy roof, flowered windows, and iconic, up-cycled round door with custom metalwork. It's a sight that's sure to warm your souls!

The welcoming warmth continues as you step inside, to be greeted by rustic Middle Earth-inspired furnishings, and homely accessories that include a live edge wooden chessboard and a hot drink bar (steaming mug of cocoa, anyone?) Even the floor has been thoughtfully designed, carefully created from over 1,200 individual pieces of cordwood.

Light the stone fireplace by evening, as you catch up on life with your loved one, then curl up in the cosy double bed when you simply can't keep your eyes open for a moment longer.

You'll want to throw that round door wide open by morning, so you can welcome the sunlight in, and feast your gaze over those spectacular orchard, river and mountain views (what a way to wake up!)

Freshen up in the gorgeous wooden bathtub-for-two, then get ready to explore the wide, open surroundings. You'll have six refreshing acres at your disposal to hike through, so bring some sturdy footwear!

Prepare to meet the friendly neighbours - scores of deer, rabbits and birds. If you're staying put, the pretty garden is frequented by plenty of butterflies, and you'll even discover a hand-made birdbox, complete with seed, for you to make some new feathered friends.

One thing is for certain: once you've made your acquaintance with Underground Hygge, you're unlikely to ever want to leave. Why?  As The Hobbit's opening sentence reads "...it was a Hobbit-hole, and that means comfort".
