The Iron Chapel
England / Ryton, Tyne and Wear
Full description
A unique and authentic retreat, lovingly restored and divinely set in a peaceful Northumberland border conservation area with a nature reserve next door.
Lovingly restored to transport you back to the soothing pace of 19th century life, The Iron Chapel is a characterful conversion of a rare and much-loved locally listed building.
Surrounded by wide open fields, not to mention an award-winning nature reserve, there's an instantly welcoming atmosphere as you arrive. Oh, and there'll be wine to greet you, too!
Friendly owners Lisa and Michael live in the stone church just next door - though they will completely respect your privacy - and the chapel's gentle restoration was their own personal labour of love.
(If they're able to greet you personally when you arrive, you'll find them more than willing to show you around, and share enthralling stories about the chapel's long history... just ask.)
As such, you'll find plenty of nods to the past, with timber clad walls, arched windows, and heavy timber floors throughout. The doors are particularly special; all relocated from the original church and vestry to calmingly authentic effect.
You'll also discover plenty of creative touches that add a quirky sense of fun, including model aircraft, original hanging chairs, and even a sparkling chandelier! The high-ceilinged living area is particularly relaxing, with its crackling log burner, and squishy leather sofas with plenty of cushions. It's the perfect setting for a post-dinner tipple, with deep conversation that lasts long into the night... or simply for opening a good book.
Though if you prefer more modern forms of entertainment, don't worry, as there's also a TV and Wi-Fi to help you pass the time.
The kitchen and dining area is a beautiful blend of old and new, with contemporary appliances that make holiday life that bit easier, and a rustic table and chairs flanked by scenery-showcasing windows.
There are three bedrooms to choose from when it's time to turn in; a ‘wow-factor' mezzanine double with a glass balcony that overlooks the living space, and two more irresistibly cosy bedrooms. Meanwhile, the family bathroom with toilet is ideal for morning freshen-ups, and there's even a separate 2nd WC that means there'll be no awkward queuing!
On sunny mornings, take your coffee out to your private seating area, and listen to the birds' joyous soundtrack as you plan the day ahead.
A gentle 20-minute stroll along the River Tyne will lead you to a collection of pubs and eateries, there's a golf course close by, and Hadrian's Wall is within a short drive - perfect for sightseers and history buffs. (You can actually see it from the Chapel)
If you've brought your bike, you can even cycle to Newcastle Quayside right from the front door, on the coast-to-coast cycle route... so, simply choose your pleasure, and dive in!
