An exquisite apartment in a magnificent castle setting, standing proudly in the ancient heart of historic Scottish Borders countryside.

A grandly unique family and dog-friendly retreat, The Earl and Countess is a beautiful three-bedroom apartment that was once the private quarters of the 14th Earl and Countess of Lauderdale.

Accessed via the south wing of the majestic Thirlestane Castle - one of the seven ‘Great Houses of Scotland' - you'll be instantly captivated by the rich sense of ancient history all around, not to mention the spectacular rural scenery that so characterises the Scottish Borders.

The apartment itself opens into a stunning black-and-white hallway with statement lighting, as befits visiting royalty! The open-plan, high-ceilinged reception room is sure to take your breath away too, draped in luxurious velvets and dotted with antiques.

Complete with its original crest, the decorative fireplace promises to be a talking point, framed by two original artworks from the castle collections.

When it's time to break bread, you'll find there's plenty of dining space for everybody, with sweeping views across the castle parklands to enjoy from huge windows that are a feast for your eyes, as well as your palate.

Each of the three bedrooms is individually styled in bold colours, with downy beds decked in high-quality linens - a sound night's sleep is all but guaranteed! The versatile master room features bedsteads that date all the way back to the First World War, with an opulent en-suite bathroom that comes complete with underfloor heating.

The elegant second bedroom is accented in deep emerald green, with an en-suite shower room that features heritage detailing.  Last but not least, the third bedroom is completed with a limed oak four-poster bed.

You'll have use of the awe-inspiring castle and estate grounds during your stay, so why not take full advantage? There are some beautiful woodland and parkland walks to indulge in (perfect for those who've brought their dogs!) and a shared courtyard area with picnic benches and a children's play park.

If you feel like casting your travel net slightly wider, nearby Lauder is teeming with shops, restaurants, coffee stops, and friendly pubs. And of course, if staying in an ancient castle apartment has given you a taste for heritage, you'll find this remarkable region of Scotland teeming with castles, romantic ruins, and grand stately homes.

You could also jump in the car and head for the bright city lights of Edinburgh, a mere half-hour drive away. Meander through the cobbled streets, enjoy a wee dram at the Scotch Whisky Centre, or take a candlelit underground tour of the city if you dare!

Enrich your minds and exhaust your bodies as much as you choose in the surrounding area, though as evening falls we're willing to bet that you won't be able to resist the call of your sumptuous castle apartment.

Just about time for another wee snifter, perhaps, as you watch that blazing sun sink over the parklands.

Things to note

Arrive from 4pm, depart by 10am. Two well-behaved dogs are permitted, for a small additional charge per dog. A travel cot and highchair can be provided on request. Please note that Thirlestane Castle is open to the public on Sundays to Thursdays during spring and summertime, which limits access to the shared courtyard.
