If your perfect adventure involves going back to basics on a private island, you'll love the Trannish Island Bothy.

Sleeping twelve travellers at a time, it's the ultimate rustic retreat - perfect for families, youth groups, sailors, and canoeists!

Trannish Island is found in the shimmering waters of Upper Lough Erne, in Northern Ireland's County Fermanagh.  Here you'll find the Bothy - a renovated island dwelling which was fully restored in 2011.  Not only does it provide shelter from the elements for the intrepid explorer, but also an unforgettable experience!

Inside, the Bothy is warm and dry, offering light, airy and very welcome accommodation to its guests.  Warm up in front of the wood-burning stove and enjoy that first cup of tea around the table.  Wooden platforms offer ample space for unrolling your roll mat and sleeping bag for a cosy night's sleep, while self-composting toilets (including one with disabled access) provide all the eco-friendly facilities you'll need.

In true adventurer style, your stay at the Bothy will be a self-sufficient one.  You're invited to bring anything you may need for your stay, including firewood, cooking equipment, matches, candles, drinking water and, of course, bedding (although sleeping bags and mats are available for hire).  You may find some supplies have been left by previous guests in traditional bothy fashion, and you may well do the same for your successors!

The Bothy has been well designed to offer space for everything guests may need.  A shelter is provided to keep your firewood dry, two covered BBQ areas are ready for you to cook up some alfresco feasts, and a designated area is the perfect spot to hang up your wet gear after a day on Upper Lough Erne.  You may find yourself sharing the Bothy with other explorers like yourself, or you can hire the whole shelter in advance for a group of you to share.

Trannish Island itself is one of eleven canoe access points on the Lough Erne Canoe Trail, and is part-owned by Share, a charity that provides opportunities for disabled and non-disabled people to take part in exciting activities (more on those later...).  This exclusivity lets you enjoy the tranquillity of the island and its unspoiled surroundings even more.  Access to Trannish Island is via the water, with the western shore the perfect place to moor your boat or canoe.

The Share Discovery Village is found across the water on Smith's Strand, just under four miles from the town of Lisnaskea.  If you don't have your own canoe or kayak, you can hire one from Share, either for a half-day or full-day - perfect for exploring Upper Lough Erne and visiting some more stops on the Canoe Trail.  If booked far enough in advance, groups may even be dropped off at a point on the Trail before finding their own way back!

There's also a whole host of other activities ready to enjoy at the Share Village, both on and around Upper Lough Erne.  As well as canoeing, try your hand at activities including banana boating, sailing, and windsurfing - or awaken your inner ancestor with a Viking Long Ship Cruise!  Landlubbers may prefer to stay on the shore instead, but can get their adrenaline rush from anything from combat corps to archery.  For a truly outdoor experience, try out some bushcraft, or learn more about the area on an environmental workshop.

Arty guests can pick from a range of craft activities (perfect for rainy days, too!).  From Modroc and balloon modelling, to mosaics and pottery, even to film making and circus skills, there's something to keep every member of the family entertained.  And don't leave without boarding the Inishcruiser first - a luxury heated cruiser that will take you on a boat trip around all the lesser known parts of beautiful Upper Lough Erne.

In all, there's no shortage of ways to make your experience an unforgettable one when you stay on Trannish Island, and no better way to fully immerse yourself in these stunning surroundings.  So whether you're a hardened adventurer or you want your first bothy experience to be a truly authentic one, the Trannish Island Bothy is the ideal choice.

Things to note

Please note that no bedding or mattresses are provided so own sleeping bags/bedding must be brought as well as own cooking equipment.  Guests are advised to bring everything they may need during their stay, including drinking water, toilet paper, washing up liquid, cooking equipment, candles, matches etc as you would for camping.  The Island operates a 'leave no trace' policy.
