A characterful, architect-designed cottage peacefully secluded amongst East Lothian countryside, close to both coast and city.

‘Grieve' is an old Scottish word for ‘farm steward', so you'll discover The Grieve's House amidst a serene rural setting, in the heart of Pencaitland's Fountainhall Estate.

A dream location, you'll be completely surrounded by timeless countryside, yet just 15 miles away lie the bright city lights of Edinburgh, and in 7 miles the beautiful East Lothian coast (translation: you won't be at a loss for things to see or do!)

Sleeping up to 4 guests, The Grieve's House itself is the result of a detailed, architect-led transformation that stays true to the cottage's original charm and character, with plenty of added contemporary style and comfort.

Enter this rustic retreat through your private courtyard, framed by mature olive trees, to be greeted by a vision of country loveliness. Great care has been taken with the interiors, including captivating printed wallpapers designed by the illustrator Edward Bawden, and simple, design-led furnishings throughout.

The cheerful kitchen and dining area, decked in sunshine yellow and oak craftsmanship, is a sociable setting to chat over good food and wine with your loved ones, while those who have to work (or indeed, catch up on all that reading they never get to do at home!) will love the light-filled, desk-equipped hall. Meanwhile, the dedicated games room features a ping pong table for those competitive types amongst you.

Head upstairs to find two elegant bedrooms, one superking and the other a versatile kingsize or twin, whichever you prefer. The rooms are divided by a spacious family bathroom, decorated in calming heritage colours.

When the weather allows, you'll want to spend plenty of time outside in your private courtyard, of course, stoking the firepit as you toast marshmallows under the stars, or simply enjoying a fresh mug of morning coffee. When the weather doesn't allow, the cosy lounge, complete with squishy seating and a wood-burning stove, promises to warm both your toes and your hearts.

Leaving all those satisfying home comforts will be difficult, yet if you feel like making the effort, you'll be rewarded with ever more wonderful sights and experiences that this beautiful part of Scotland has to offer.

Those in the mood for a gentle walk with a purpose will enjoy meandering to the sleepy village of Pencaitland (or perhaps Glenkinchie Distillery instead, if you feel the need to fuel your return journey!)

Prefer something a little livelier? The capital city of Edinburgh is achingly close, or take the slightly shorter seven-mile journey to bustling Haddington instead, where you can browse independent shops and galleries, peppered with relaxing coffee stops.

Dalkeith Country Park is perfect for family days out, complete with its children's adventure park, or simply head to the coast for some spectacular wildlife-watching opportunities.

As each hectic, memory-filled day passes, the pleasure of returning to the calming sanctuary of The Grieve's House promises to grow. A true home-from-home, your first visit is unlikely to be your last.
